What's Next
  • Edmonton embarks on a four-game road trip beginning on Thursday in San Jose at 8:30 p.m. MDT against the Sharks.
Kyle Brodziak scored a pair of goals early in the third period to extend Edmonton's lead and the Oilers never looked back, defeating the Minnesota Wild 4-2 at Rexall Place on Tuesday night.

Edmonton killed off the game's first power play after Steve Staios knocked down Brian Rolston of Minnesota. The Wild only managed one perimeter shot during the two-minute minor.

About 12 minutes in, Minnesota had a dangerous chance in front of the Oilers net. Keith Carney fired a shot from the left point that Garon kicked out but with the puck lying dangerously in the slot, Ladislav Smid cleared it out of harm's way.

Curtis Glencross almost scored his first as an Oiler late in the period. Kyle Brodziak fired the puck across the crease, through Niklas Backstrom. Glencross had a gaping net but he couldn't get a handle on the puck.

About a minute later, Andrew Cogliano carried the puck into the Wild zone and fed the puck over to Fernando Pisani. His wrister beat Backstrom top corner to give Edmonton a 1-0 lead.

Shots on goal after one period were 10-7.

Minnesota had several chances to tie the game early in the second. Ethan Moreau was able to clear the puck during a scramble in front with Garon down and out and moments later, the Oilers netminder made a nice blocker save.

With Ladislav Smid in the box for cross-checking, Minnesota had plenty of chances to get the game back on even terms. However, Garon had other ideas as he slid across to deny Gaborik on what was the Wild's best chance of the man advantage.

7:57 into the period, Minnesota finally struck to tie things up. Kurtis Foster blasted the puck from the right point and Garon made the initial stop but Pavol Demitra was right at the doorstep to put in the rebound.

Midway through the period, Keith Carney took down Dustin Penner as he carried the puck into the Minnesota zone. The result was another Edmonton power play with a chance to re-take the lead.

29 seconds into the power play, Jarret Stoll wristed a shot from the left point that beat Backstrom along the ice, making it a 2-1 game.

With 3:13 to go in the second, Gagner made a nice touch pass over to Pitkanen who found Robert Nilsson at the left side of the net. Backstrom got across to stop his shot and then stayed in position to deny Cogliano on the rebound.

Minnesota outshot Edmonton 21-4 in the second period and 31-11 overall through 40 minutes.

In a surprise move, Josh Harding replaced Niklas Backstrom in goal to start the third period.

Edmonton tested Harding with four shots in the opening 2:30 of the third period with one of them getting by to increase the Oilers lead to 3-1.

Curtis Glencross picked up the puck in the corner of the zone and fed it out front to Kyle Brodziak. Brodziak's initial shot was stopped by Harding but his second attempt snuck past the Wild goaltender.

Brodziak scored again on his next shift, his second of the night. This time, he teed up a shot from the left hash marks to beat Harding and make it a three-goal game. Glencross got the assist again.

The Oilers outshot Minnesota 10-1 through the first 10 minutes of the period.

Mark Parrish was sprung on a breakaway past the midway point of the third after coming out of the penalty box. Parrish tried a deke move on Garon and got the puck to slip through the pads of the Oilers goaltender but it was in no danger of crossing the goal line.

Minnesota added a power play goal with 4:05 left in the third. Brian Rolston's blast from the point beat a screened Garon low to close the gap to 4-2.

NOTES: Tonight was Fernando Pisani's 300th NHL game. It was also Craig MacTavish's 550th game as head coach.... Gaborik's assist on Demitra's goal extended his scoring streak to three games... Gagner's assist on Stoll's goal increased his scoring streak to four games. He has a goal and five assists for six points in that time... Glencross had two assists, his first two points as an Oiler. Brodziak's two goals were a career high.
