Update

What's Next
  • Edmonton faces Calgary at 5:00 p.m. MST on Saturday night at the Pengrowth Saddledome for Hockey Day in Canada.
After Chicago scored the game's first goal, Edmonton responded with four straight to win by a score of 4-1. Jarret Stoll, Dustin Penner, Ethan Moreau and Joni Pitkanen scored for the Oilers while Mathieu Garon stopped 40 of 41.

Zack Stortini and Martin Lapointe renewed acquaintances 19 seconds into the game. The two dropped the gloves and went toe-to-toe with some big punches thrown on both sides. In the end, Stortini landed the most shots and took down the Blackhawks veteran.

The line of Andrew Cogliano, Ethan Moreau and Fernando Pisani generated some chances early in the game. Cogliano had the puck to the right side of the net where he stopped and tried to feed Moreau on the opposite side but his pass just missed the mark.

Strong forechecking from the trio resulted in Chicago's Duncan Keith taking the game's first penalty. Late in the power play, Robert Nilsson upended Adam Burish to end the man advantage and put Chicago on one of their own.

Edmonton went on another power play after Jordan Hendry accidentally cleared the puck over the glass in his own zone. The Oilers came close on the next man advantage using a unit consisting of Reasoner, Moreau, Pisani, Stoll and Pitkanen. Chicago's Rene Bourque lost his stick and goaltender Patrick Lalime lost his as well giving Edmonton an opportunity to put some sustained pressure on their opposition.

The Oilers moved the puck well and got several shots off from the perimeter but couldn't generate any chances from in front of the net. Late in the man advantage Hemsky caught Chicago on a line change and charged in on goal. However, he was hammered by Brent Sopel just as he made his attempted deke in front.

Chicago had another power play late in the opening period and this time they capitalized. Duncan Keith blasted a shot from the point that was tipped on its way to the net by Patrick Sharp, beating Garon.

After one period, shots on goal were 12-9 for Chicago.

Jarret Stoll scored 2:16 into the second period to tie the game at 1-1. Hemsky fed Stoll at the left point and his slap shot beat Lalime low blocker side.

Three minutes later, Geoff Sanderson made a nice pass over to Tom Gilbert at the bottom of the right circle. Gilbert's shot went across the goal mouth and hit Gagner who was stationed at the left post but never crossed the line. The goal light went on and the play was reviewed but it was ruled no goal.

8:10 into the period and Edmonton on their fourth power play, Sam Gagner fed the puck from the corner of the Chicago zone and Penner backhanded it in front of the net on a deflection.

34 seconds later, Ladislav Smid made a nice play to get the puck to the net. From there, captain Ethan Moreau jammed it in and increased Edmonton's lead to 3-1.

Andrew Cogliano had a breakaway late in the period but couldn't get enough of a handle on the puck to deke out Lalime.

Shots on goal after two were 20-19 in favour of the Blackhawks.

51 seconds into the third period, Edmonton scored again to take a 4-1 lead. Joni Pitkanen picked up the puck and circled around the Chicago zone. He fired it from the left circle past Lalime for the goal.

Garon made a huge stop five minutes into the third while Chicago had a power play. James Wizniewsky one-timed a shot from the top of the left circle but the Oilers goaltender snagged it out of the air for a great glove save.

11 minutes into the third, Andrew Cogliano and Joni Pitkanen skated in on a two-on-one. Pitkanen fed the puck over to Cogliano whose redirection attempt was denied by Lalime. The Chicago goaltender came across to make the big save.

With Sam Gagner in the penalty box and about 3:20 to play in the third, Chicago pulled their goaltender looking to close the three-goal gap. Martin Havlat got in behind the Oilers defence and skated in alone. He was hooked from behind by Greene, putting the Oilers down two men. Including the extra skater, Chicago had six attackers to Edmonton's three.

Gagner came out of the box, reducing Edmonton's disadvantage to a six-on-four. Moments later, Chicago snuck one in behind Garon but Gagner saved it just before the puck crossed the line.
