A goal by Detroit's Valtteri Filppula with 24.4 seconds left gave the Red Wings a 2-1 win over Edmonton at Rexall Place on Tuesday night. Steve Staios scored the lone Oilers goal.

Detroit was outshooting Edmonton 5-1 early in the first period but the best scoring chance went to the Oilers. Staios made a nice pass across the neutral zone to spring Ales Hemsky in on a partial break. Hemsky attempted to deke around Red Wings starter Chris Osgood but just missed the net.

Edmonton had the game's first power play just past the midway point of period one but were unable to muster much of a scoring chance during the two minutes.

MacTavish started to mix up the lines late in the first, playing Cogliano with Sanderson and Penner and moving Stoll onto a line with Pouliot and Sanderson.

Edmonton successfully killed off a penalty to Shawn Horcoff in the final few minutes of the first. After having his stick fly up after being knocked down in the corner, Horcoff received a penalty for high sticking.

After one period, shots on goal were 13-7 for Detroit.

Three minutes into the second period, Matt Greene had a knee-on-knee collision and had to be helped off the ice. On that same play, Marty Reasoner was sent off for tripping.

On the ensuing power play, Henrik Zetterberg was at the right faceoff circle where he took a cross-ice feed from Nicklas Lidstrom. He one-timed the shot past Roloson to make it 1-0 Red Wings.

1:49 later, Steve Staios took a pass from Jarret Stoll at the right point, shuffled to the left and then wired a bullet top corner behind Osgood.

Ales Hemsky had a great chance to put the Oilers up by a goal after a Chris Chelios giveaway left him all alone in the slot but his shot went just wide of the Detroit net.

After two periods, the score was tied 1-1 with Detroit holding a 25-13 shot edge on Edmonton.

Andrew Cogliano almost broke the deadlock early in the third when he used his speed to drive towards the net. Stoll threw the puck on net and Cogliano almost chipped it past Osgood.

As the third period was winding down, Edmonton started to pour on the pressure. They pinned Detroit deep for a couple of minutes but were unable to get the puck past Osgood.

With 24.4 seconds to go, Valterri Filppula beat Dick Tarnstrom in a race for the puck before firing it under the crossbar, giving Detroit a 2-1 lead.

NOTES: Matt Greene left the game in the second period with a left ankle injury. He was sent to hospital for x-rays... The 10,000 pink and blue hats that were up for sale in support of Hockey Fights Cancer sold out before the opening puck drop... The goal by Zetterberg extended his scoring streak to 13 games. He has 10 goals and 12 assists during that span... Datsyuk's assist extended his scoring streak to 8 games (2 goals, 10 assists).
Dwayne Roloson, using his pink stick for tonight's game, turns aside a shot during a Red Wings power play as Tomas Holmstrom and Dick Tarnstrom look on.
