Steve Smith was appointed as Assistant Coach on July 15, 2010 and serves alongside Kelly Buchberger under the direction of new Head Coach Ralph Krueger. Smith, most recently a scout with the Chicago Blackhawks, re-joins the team that drafted him back in 1981.
The 49-year-old Glasgow, Scotland native had a solid career in the NHL playing in 804 games recording 375 points (72G, 303A) and 2,139 penalty minutes. He won three Stanley Cups while with the Oilers and made it to the Finals twice more with the Blackhawks. In 134 post-season games Smith had 52 points (11G, 41A). His best season came in 1992-93 with the Blackhawks when he collected 57 points (10G, 47A) in 78 games. He also had two 50-plus point seasons with the Oilers.
Smith also served as an Assistant Coach with the Calgary Flames during the 1997-98 season but elected to return to the ice playing three more seasons with the Flames before retiring.
Smith played his junior hockey with the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League from 1980-83 appearing in 170 games scoring 20 goals and 83 assists for 103 points as well as accumulating 481 penalty minutes.
Steve and his wife, Sheri, have five kids, Alexandria (23) Barron (21), who is a member of the CIS’ University of Alberta Golden Bears, Nicole (17), Tanner (16) and Zoe (11).
