Oilers Add Craig Ramsay to Coaching Staff
The Edmonton Oilers announced they have appointed Craig Ramsay as an Assistant Coach, while Kelly Buchberger transitions into Player Personnel.
Ramsay, 63, brings over 40 years of NHL experience with seven different organizations including the Florida Panthers, Atlanta Thrashers, Boston Bruins, Tampa Bay Lightning, Philadelphia Flyers, Ottawa Senators and Buffalo Sabres. Most recently, Ramsay served as an Assistant Coach for the Florida Panthers for two seasons (2011-13).
Ramsay began his coaching career with the Buffalo Sabres where he served as an Assistant Coach during the 1986-87 season and took over as interim Head Coach late that year. He also spent time in the Sabres Hockey Operations department as the Assistant General Manager and Director of Player Personnel, prior to his departure in 1993.
The Weston, Ontario native holds an impressive coaching resume which includes serving as Head Coach of the Atlanta Thrashers (2010-11). He also served as an Assistant Coach for the Philadelphia Flyers (1998-00) and was named the team’s interm Head Coach in February 2000, compiling a record of 16-8-1-0 while guiding the Flyers to an Atlantic Division title.
He has served as an Assistant and Associate Coach for several teams including the Ottawa Senators (1996-98), Florida Panthers (93-95, 2011-2013), Boston Bruins (2007-10) and Tampa Bay Lightning (2001-07), where he won the Stanley Cup in 2004.
Drafted in the 2nd round, 19th overall in 1971 by the Buffalo Sabres, Ramsay spent his entire NHL playing career with the Sabres accumulating 672 points (252G, 420A) and 201 penalty minutes in 1,070 games. In 1985 he was awarded the Frank J. Selke Trophy, given annually to the forward who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game.
After spending the past six seasons behind the Oilers bench as an Assistant Coach, Kelly Buchberger will transition into a new role in Player Personnel.
Buchberger, 46, began his coaching career in 2004-05, serving as Geoff Ward’s Assistant Coach with the American Hockey League’s Edmonton Road Runners and also served as the Oilers’ Development Coach in 2006-07. He made the move to the NHL coaching ranks in 2008-09 following a season as Head Coach of the AHL’s Springfield Falcons.
Buchberger was named the Oilers ninth captain in 1995-96 and served in that capacity for four seasons. He was the Oilers 9th round draft pick in the 1985 NHL Draft and was a member of the Oilers 1987 and 1990 Stanley Cup championship teams.
