Edmonton Oilers goaltender Ben Scrivens improved to 2-0 at the IIHF World Championships in Belarus as he stopped 29 of 30 shots and Canada dominated Denmark, 6-1. Cody Hodgson and Matt Read each scored two goals in the win.
Hodgson opened the scoring 5:24 into the game when he rushed past the Danish defence and fired a shot past Patrick Galbraith.
Denmark responded with the equalizer at 9:06 but that would be the end of their offence for the game.
Hodgson gave Canada a 2-1 lead at 5:03 of the second period and the team would score four times in the third to close out the game.
Denmark defenceman and Edmonton Oiler Philip Larsen finished the game with two penalty minutes and two shots on goal in 21:02 of ice time. He was -1 for the game.
Next up for Canada is a game against Italy tomorrow at 7:45 a.m. MT while Denmark plays the Czech Republic on Saturday at 7:45 a.m. MT.
USA 5 - LATVIA 6
Edmonton Oilers defenceman Jeff Petry and Team USA dropped a thrilling 6-5 decision to Latvia at the IIHF World Championships in Belarus on Thursday. Latvia moved into second place in Group B with the win.
Latvia took a 6-4 lead into the waning minutes of the third period before the Americans got a goal from Brock Nelson with 90 seconds remaining to make things interesting. However, the Latvians would hold on to post another exciting victory on the world stage.
Petry played 15:39 for USA and finished -2.
USA plays Kazakhstan tomorrow at 7:45 a.m.
