Jared McCann looks to finish strong
Sault Ste. Marie prospect Jared McCann hopes for a strong finish to his season

CALGARY, AB - Jared McCann is a member of the OHL's Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and is currently ranked 11th in the NHL Central Scouting Service Draft Rankings. McCann was selected fourth overall in the 2012 OHL priority selection by the Greyhounds.

This 6’1’’ 175 pound centreman ended his first season with the Greyhounds with 21 goals and 33 assists totaling 44 points in 64 games. McCann is now in his second season in the OHL and has tallied 20 goals and 23 assists for 43 points in 42 games.

McCann has also gotten the opportunity to pay with Oilers 2013 1st round prospect Darnell Nurse.

“It’s been unbelievable! Such a great leader, his skill level is obviously growing as he’s matured through the game. You know I really think he’s going to be in the NHL for Edmonton next year. He’s the best guy, he’s my roommate on the road, so he’s just, you know, he’s kind of growing on you.”

McCann has also said that even if he and Nurse don’t play for the same team they will still remain great friends.

“He’s just a great guy that either way if we didn’t get drafted to the same team we’d (still) be such close friends and he’s just like I said he’s a great leader and he’ll always be a really good friend."

In 2012, McCann was name Ontario Hockey Federation ALLIANCE Player of the year.
McCann got the opportunity to play in the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in 2013; Team Canada would take gold at the tournament.

Even though McCann had a bit of a rough season, he believes he’s back on track.

“We’ve started off really well. And you know I’ve felt like I kind of fell off a bit but I’m starting to pick it back up again and I should be good from here.”

McCann was named to Team Orr for the BMO CHL Top Prospects game on January 15, 2014 at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, AB.

A game like the CHL Top Prospects game, it gets players to play with players that they would normally be playing against. It also gives players very little time to play together and get to know everyone's style of play.  But it’s definitely not the first time some players have teamed up together.

“Really good, you know, I played a lot of these guys at the U18s and things like that so I’m pretty close with most of them and you know it’s going to be another great opportunity to play with them.”

With the draft approaching, McCann is okay with going anywhere, as long as he hears his name called.

“Yeah it’s every kid's dream right, you know dream come true and on that day, I don’t really care where I go or anything like that. I just want to hear my name called.”
