The Edmonton Oilers dropped a 5-4 decision to the Winnipeg Jets at Rexall Place in the team's season opener on Tuesday night. Luke Gazdic opened the scoring with his first career NHL goal but the Jets responded with a pair to take a 2-1 lead. Boyd Gordon's power play tip-in knotted both sides at 2-2 after 20 minutes.

The Oilers scored twice in the middle frame to make it 4-2 on goals by Ales Hemsky and Jesse Joensuu. A late Jets second-period marker drew the visitors to within one and set the stage for the third period where goals by Jacob Trouba and Michael Frolik gave Winnipeg a 5-4 victory. Shots on goal were 38-28 for the host Oilers.

Take a closer look at the game as we go Under The Scope:

The Oilers had the lead heading into the third period but with less than nine minutes to play, Jacob Trouba teed up a shot from the right point that beat Dubnyk and got the Jets on even terms. Less than four minutes later, Winnipeg took the lead for good.

Ales Hemsky skated into the Jets zone and weaved over to the left face-off circle before wiring a shot high behind Pavelec to put the Oilers in front by a score of 3-2.  It was a vintage Hemsky goal.

Michael Frolik scored twice for the Jets - including the game winner - as Winnipeg came from behind to defeat the Oilers.

Luke Gazdic played his first career NHL game and really made an impact. Not only did he net his first career NHL goal which made it 1-0, he also made quick work of Chris Thorburn in the second period in a spirited fight.

Tonight was the first time the Winnipeg Jets visit Rexall Place since March 29, 1996 when Edmonton skated away with a 3-2 win. The Atlanta Thrashers -- the team where this incarnation of the Jets had played before -- lost 5-3 to the Oilers at Rexall Place back on February 19, 2011.

"I don't care if it's the first second of the game or last second. Every moment in the game counts for something."

 - Oilers Head Coach Dallas Eakins who wasn't happy with the fact that the team didn't put in a complete effort.
