Billy Moores rejoins Oilers

General Manager Craig MacTavish announced today the Edmonton Oilers have named Billy Moores Director of Coaching Development and Special Projects. Moores will work with the coaching staffs of the Edmonton Oilers, the American Hockey League’s Oklahoma City Barons and the Western Hockey League’s Edmonton Oil Kings.

Moores enters his 13th season with the Oilers, after serving as Senior Director of Player Development from 2010-2012. Prior to working with the Oilers development staff, Moores was an Assistant Coach from 2000-2009.

The Edmonton, Alberta native joined the Oilers coaching staff on July 21st, 2000. Before returning to Edmonton, Moores had previously served as an Assistant Coach with the New York Rangers from 1996-98.

From 1976-94, Moores was a member of the University of Alberta Golden Bears coaching staff, serving as a Head Coach for seven seasons and an Assistant Coach for 10. He was first named Head Coach in 1979-80, when Clare Drake left to lead the 1980 Canadian Olympic Team. He also replaced Drake in 1983-84, before assuming the head coaching duties on a full time basis in 1990-91.

In his seven seasons as Head Coach at Alberta, Moores compiled a career record of 220-80-23 (.717) with a Canada West Hockey conference record of 129-44-20 (.720). A four-time Canada West Hockey Coach of the Year (1984, 1990, 1991, 1993) and two-time CIAU Coach of the Year (1980, 1991), Moores led the Golden Bears to five CIAU national championship tournaments, winning the University Cup in 1980 and 1992.
