Oilers select Darnell Nurse seventh overall in the 2013 NHL Draft

General Manager Craig MacTavish announced today the Edmonton Oilers have selected defenceman Darnell Nurse, in the 1st round, 7th overall in the 2013 NHL Draft.
 
Nurse, 18, has spent the past two seasons with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds of the Ontario Hockey League, recording 51 points (13G, 38A) and 177 penalty minutes in 121 games played.
 
In 2012-13 he appeared in 68 games, posting a career high in both goals and assists (12-29-41), while recording 116 penalty minutes. In six playoff games, he tallied four points (1G, 3A) and six penalty minutes. Nurse was the OHL’s Scholastic Player of the Year for 2012-13 after carrying an 85% average in six Grade 12 University Prep courses.
 
The 6’5, 192-pound blueliner played for Team Canada at the 2013 Under-18 World Junior Hockey Championship and participated in the 2013 Canadian Hockey League Top Prospects Game. Other international experiences include a bronze medal with Team Ontario at the 2012 Under-17 Hockey Challenge (named to the tournament All-Star Team) and a gold medal with Team Canada at the 2012 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament.

The Hamilton, Ontario native is the son of former Canadian Football League receiver Richard Nurse and nephew of former National Football League quarterback Donovan McNabb.
