The Czech Republic scored two powerplay goals in the game as they go on to defeat Belarus, 2-0 in their opening game of the tournament.

Czech goalie, Alexander Salak made 21 saves in the game for his first shutout in the round-robin tournament.

The Czech Republic opened the scoring midway through the first on a five-on-three powerplay chance.

Belarus was called for a slashing penalty and six seconds later; Andrei Filichkin was attempting to clear the puck but sent it over the boards to draw a delay of game penalty.

The Czech Republic went on a five-on-three powerplay for 1:47 and was able to capitalize when Radim Vrbata made a cross-ice pass to Jakub Voracek, who was able to put it pass Vitali Belinski to put them up, 1-0.

It was scoreless in the second with the Czech Republic’s best scoring chance coming on the powerplay. Jiri Tlusty was all-alone in front but was robbed with the glove save by Belinksi.

They held Belarus to only four shots on net in the second to keep their 1-0 lead.

In the third period, the Czech Republic went on their seventh powerplay as Belarus drew an interference penalty.

Early on the powerplay chance, the puck was turned over in the neutral zone giving Belarus a short-handed chance but was stopped by Salak.

In the other end from the blue line, Ladislav Smid was able to throw it on net through traffic where Belinksi was able to make the initial save, but the rebound landed on the stick of Vrbata, who was able to put it into the open net to extend their lead, 2-0.

In the game, Ladislav Smid recorded one assist with one shot on net and 21:54 of ice time.

The Czech Republic will face Sweden on Saturday with puck drop scheduled at 12:15 P.M. (MT).
