Happy Trade Deadline Day, hockey fans!

Much in the same way Jul. 1’s Free Agent Frenzy has, the NHL Trade Deadline has basically evolved into a national holiday. TSN and Sportsnet (and edmontonoilers.com/OilersTV!) devote their entire day of programming to the rumour mill, breaking news, reaction and analysis.

And why wouldn’t we? Since the 1979-80 season, there have been 459 trades involving 844 players on Deadline Day. The Oilers have been particularly active, making 51 deals and exchanging a total of 110 players with teams across the League.

Some of the biggest names in Oilers history have come and gone on past deadline days, including Andy Moog, Bill Ranford, Jason Smith, Tommy Salo and Ryan Smyth. The day has also resulted in some surprises no one saw coming.

The Oilers and Calgary Flames made their first and only trade with one another after swinging a deal in 2010 that sent Steve Staios to the Heart of the New West in exchange for Aaron Johnson and a third-round pick (Travis Ewanyk).

Will the Oilers add to their tally by making one today? Only time will tell. Join the discussion on Twitter by using the hashtag #NHLTrade (or #Tradeline, a 140-character-friendly portmanteau coined by OilersTV Video Producer Nyki Scheuerman) and by staying locked in to edmontonoilers.com for the most comprehensive coverage in Oil Country.

Many players still remain, but with the likes of Jarome Iginla (to Pittsburgh), Jay Bouwmeester (to St. Louis) and Jaromir Jagr (to Boston) already on the move, 2013 could be quiter than usual.

But it's tough to say. The NHL has surprised itself before.

In the meantime, let’s take a trip down memory lane and look back at every trade the Oilers have made on Deadline Day:
