Under the Scope: Oilers vs Sharks

The Oilers built a 3-1 advantage on San Jose in the early stages of the third period on the strength of goals from Sam Gagner, Shawn Horcoff and Ryan Jones, but the Sharks scored twice to force overtime and a shootout, prevailing in a 4-3 decision. Jordan Eberle scored for Edmonton in the shootout, but both Dan Boyle and Logan Couture tallied for the Sharks to give the visiting squad the two points.

Take a closer look at the game as we go Under The Scope:

With Ryan Whitney in the penalty box for interference, the Sharks cut the Oilers lead to 3-2 with 13:10 to go in the third as Joe Pavelski one-times a shot past Devan Dubnyk. San Jose scored again less than three minutes later, ultimately leading to their shootout win.

Oilers winger Ryan Jones scored his first goal of the season on Wednesday in fine fashion, stripping Matt Irwin of the puck behind the Sharks net and sneaking a wraparound through Antti Niemi's pads 4:07 into the third period.

Logan Couture had a great game for the Sharks, scoring two of their three regulation goals and then scoring again in the shootout to spur his team to victory. He also led his team with six shots on goal and logged the second-most playing time of all San Jose forwards at 20:32.

Nick Schultz had one of his best games of the season for Edmonton in a losing cause. The veteran defenceman was +2 with an assist, two hits and a blocked shot, jumping out of the penalty box to set up Shawn Horcoff's second period goal.

Wednesday's battle at Rexall was a matchup of the two teams with the highest percentages of their goals coming via the power play in the NHL. The Oilers led the way with 37% of their goals coming with the man advantage, and the Sharks generated 35% of their offence on the PP.

It seems like just the other day the Oilers were returning from the longest road trip in franchise history, but their four-game homestand concludes on Saturday in the second half of CBC's Hockey Night In Canada double-header as the St. Louis Blue visit Rexall Place for an 8:00pm game. The Oilers then play a pair on the road in Nashville and St. Louis.
