Under the Scope: Oilers at Avalanche


Captain Shawn Horcoff scored the game's first and game-winning-goal in the first period to give the Oilers their first shutout win of the year. Sam Gagner's notched his tenth goal of the season, while Magnus Paajarvi batted in his own rebound to extend the Oilers lead. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored his first goal in 12 games giving him eleven points on the year while Devan Dubnyk made 36 saves to give him his first shutout of the season, as the Oilers go on to win 4-0.

Midway through the first period, Shawn Horcoff was all alone in front to beat Semyon Varlamov through the five-hole, giving the Oilers a 1-0 lead. With this goal, Horcoff passed Doug Weight and moved into the eighth spot for all-time Oilers goal with 158. Horcoff also passed Esa Tikkanen to move into eighth spot for all-time franchise points with 445.

In the second period, Magnus Paajarvi was streaking down the left side, shot the puck on net and waited for the rebound to be low enough so he could bat it in midair, to give the Oilers a 3-0 lead. Paajarvi had one goal and one assist in tonight's game, giving him his fifth goal of the season seventh point of the year. He had five shots on net with 16:08 of ice time and finished with a +2 rating.

Sam Gagner had one goal and one assist, with a +2 rating on Tuesday night's win against the Avalanche. It was Gagner's tenth of the season, giving him a team lead of 25 points on the year. In his last two games, Gagner has three goals and one assist.


Jeff Petry led the team with five blocked shots and five hits in the Oilers win. Petry had two shots on net, with a total of 23:13 of ice time and ended the night with a +2 rating.


The last time the Oilers shut out the Colorado Avalanche was back in 2002 in Edmonton, when Tommy Salo held onto a 1-0 win.
