PRE-GAME NOTES
The Edmonton Oilers take on Northwest Division rivals the Vancouver Canucks for the second time this season. We'll be updating the action from the game as it happens. We'll also be adding photos, videos from big plays and more throughout the game.
The Oilers have made a few changes from Saturday's lineup against Colorado. Shawn Horcoff and Magnus Paajarvi -- recalled from OKC -- are back in. Eric Belanger (lower body) is out as is Darcy Hordichuk.
On defence, Corey Potter gets back into the lineup. Ryan Whitney is the odd-man out.
Line Combinations (and defence pairings) for the Oilers:
Hall - Nugent-Hopkins - Eberle
Yakupov - Gagner - Hemsky
Smyth - Horcoff - Petrell
Hartikainen - Lander - Paajarvi
Smid - Petry
N.Schultz - J.Schultz
Fistric - Potter
Dubnyk
FIRST PERIOD
20:00: The puck has dropped to start the first period of play.
19:18: Devan Dubnyk makes a nice kick save on a dangerous rebound to Henrik Sedin in front of the net in the opening minute as Vancouver carries the play early on.
17:14: Nail Yakupov flips the puck out of play from his own zone which results in a delay-of-game call, giving Vancouver the game's first power play.
14:39: Oilers kill off that penalty and nearly score a goal of their own. Nugent-Hopkins shovels the puck on net from the slot and Eberle is right there for the rebound but Canucks starting goaltender Roberto Luongo smothers it in his crease.
11:35: Aaron Volpatti runs into Mark Fistric in the corner of the Oilers zone and takes two minutes for boarding as a result, putting Edmonton on its first power play of the game.
2:56: Henrik Sedin upends Potter deep in the Oilers zone, receiving two for boarding and putting Edmonton back on the power play.
1:22: With time ticking down on the penalty, Ales Hemsky races in to puck up a loose puck at the top of the crease and makes a nifty move to deke out Luongo and give the Oilers the lead. | EDM 1, VAN 0
0:12: For their last shift of the period, in an effort to get another goal, the Oilers go with five forwards: Eberle, Hall, Nugent-Hopkins, Hemsky and Gagner.
0:00: Shots on goal after one were 8 to 5 for the Oilers.
FIRST PERIOD NOTES
Hemsky's power play goal broke an 0-for-6 drought for the Oilers power play.
Gagner netted an assist on the Hemsky goal, his 7th assist and 10th point of the season. Gagner now leads the Oilers in points on the season and has picked up at least a point in each of the team's first 9 games of the season.
SECOND PERIOD
20:00: The second period is now underway. Mark Fistric is not on the bench for the Oilers after limping off late in the first following a missed hit on Jordan Schroeder.
