Minute-by-minute updates from Edmonton's home opener vs. San Jose
The Edmonton Oilers open the home portion of their 2012-13 schedule tonight at Rexall Place. We'll be updating the action from the game as it happens. We'll also be adding photos, videos from big plays and more throughout the game.
The Oilers will be going with a lineup similar to what they had on Sunday, with the exception of Magnus Paajarvi being slotted in place of the injured Ben Eager.

20:00: The puck has dropped for tonight's game between the Oilers and Sharks.
17:44: Ales Hemsky took a holding penalty to give the Sharks their first power play of the game.
16:57: Less than a minute later, Jeff Petry took a tripping minor to put the Oilers down two men for the next 1:13 or less.
16:43: Dan Boyle tees up a shot from the top of the right circle past Dubnyk to score on the two-man advantage and make it a 1-0 game for San Jose. The power play continues. | SJ 1, EDM 0
15:30: San Jose strikes again with just over 30 seconds left in the Petry penalty. Logan Couture takes the puck down the wing and wrists it past Dubnyk from the left circle to double their lead. | SJ 2, EDM 0
12:11: Brad Stuart gets an interference penalty in the offensive zone, putting Edmonton on their first power play of the game.
11:35: The Oilers get their first shot on goal at the 8:25 mark and it's a big one. Sam Gagner takes the puck and spots Nail Yakupov with a cross-crease pass. Yakupov makes no mistake, one-timing it in past Antti Niemi for his first career NHL goal. | SJ 2, EDM 1
9:58: San Jose gets that goal back. Patrick Marleau takes a nice no-look pass from Joe Thornton right in the slot. Marleau makes no mistake, wristing it past Dubnyk for the goal. | SJ 3, EDM 1
9:27: Some pushing and shoving in front of the Oilers net results in a penalty to Corey Potter for roughing and another Sharks power play.
8:53: Again, the Sharks strike on the power play and again it's Patrick Marleau. Thornton feeds Marleau and he roofs it with a quick wrister for a three-goal San Jose lead. | SJ 4, EDM 1
1:51: Logan Couture picks up a rebound and puts it into the back of the net to extend San Jose's lead to a commanding 5-1 late in the period. | SJ 5, EDM 1
0:40: Marc-Edouard Vlasic scores on a blast from the point to give the Sharks a five-goal lead. | SJ 6, EDM 1
0:00: The period miraculously comes to an end with the Oilers trailing 6-1 and being outshot 17 to 7.
An Oilers rookie has now scored in three consecutive home openers. Jordan Eberle in 2010 vs. Calgary, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins last year vs. Pittsburgh and Nail Yakupov this season.
The last time the Oilers allowed more than six goals in a period was on January 17, 1980. Boston scored seven goals in the second period en route to a 7-1 win over Edmonton.
The Oilers' worst home opening loss came on October 3, 1997 in an 8-2 defeat at the hands of the Detroit Red Wings.
20:00: The second period is now underway. Yann Danis started the period in goal for the Oilers.
11:25: Ryan Smyth collides with Adam Burish in the Sharks zone and gets two minutes for roughing as a result, putting the Sharks on their fourth power play of the night. San Jose had converted on their three prior man advantages.
9:27: Eberle and Nugent-Hopkins had a nice rush right at the end of the Smyth minor. Eberle tried a backhand from point-blank range but Niemi was equal to the task.
6:35: Vlasic takes an interference penalty to put the Oilers back on the power play.
6:01: Smyth is bashed into the boards in the corner of the Sharks zone by Dan Boyle, giving Edmonton a two-man advantage.
5:35: Justin Schultz one-times a shot from the right circle under the crossbar to score his first career NHL goal. | SJ 6, EDM 2
0:00: The second period comes to an end with the Oilers outshooting San Jose 17 to 9. Overall, San Jose had a 26-24 edge through 40 minutes.
20:00: The third period is now underway.
16:26: Taylor Hall skates into the Sharks zone and fires a wrist shot from the high slot that beats Niemi and makes it a three-goal game. | SJ 6, EDM 3
13:55: Ryane Clowe gets two minutes for cross-checking and Eric Belanger gets two minutes for slashing in retaliation to put four skaters aside.
12:13: Gagner gets tripped up on his way to the net by Matthew Irwin, resulting in an Edmonton power play and a chance to draw within two goals.
8:29: Joe Pavelski clears the puck over the glass in his own zone and that means another chance for the Oilers to score with the man advantage.
2:30: Ales Hemsky heads to the penalty box for interference, putting the Sharks on the powerplay.
