The Alberta Aviation Museum came alive on Tuesday morning as members of the local media gathered to duke it out at the 8th Annual Christmas Bureau gingerbread decorating campaign kickoff. Although bragging rights were on the line it was the Christmas Bureau of Edmonton, and their mission to brighten the holidays for over 65,000 Edmontonians, that came out on top.

“The turn out today has been fabulous,” said Wendy Batty, Executive Director of the Christmas Bureau of Edmonton. “We really are the City of Champions and Edmontonians have a way of getting behind all of the great charitable organizations, including the Christmas Bureau. Our community comes out, supports, fundraises and makes a difference.”

Among those eager to help make a difference were members of the Edmonton Oil Kings. Stephane Legault, Cole Benson, Brandon Baddock, Luke Bertolucci and Edgars Kulda were all on hand to lend their artistic talent and comedic insight to gingerbread decorating contest.

“I think if we had put as much effort into building our gingerbread house as we put into eating it we might have had a better shot at winning,” noted Oil Kings forward Cole Benson.

Amidst the laughter and smiles, the spirit of Christmas caring and sharing could be felt throughout the room. It will take $1.8 million to make a difference for the thousands of families, seniors and singles that will turn to the Christmas Bureau this holiday season and that fact hit home with attendees.

To kick start the campaign and help the Christmas Bureau reach their goal, the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation presented a $25,000 donation at Tuesday’s event.

“The Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation has partnered with the Christmas Bureau for over 13 years,” said Natalie Minckler, Executive Director of the Foundation. “The entire Oilers family has a longstanding tradition of helping fight hunger during the holidays and this year is no exception.”

In addition to the donation, the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation and Oilers Copper Jackets will host a fundraising luncheon on December 14 in support of the Christmas Bureau. Tickets can be purchased by visiting To make a donation directly to the Christmas Bureau visit
