"I don't think it (one's sexual orientation) would change a thing in the locker room," Jones said, reiterating You Can Play's mission. "We have guys from all over the world, of different races and sexuality (and it) would be no different. If a player can help the team and is a good person, who they choose as a partner is irrelevant.

"I participated in the You Can Play Project to honour a friend and member of 'the brotherhood', Brendan Burke, but most importantly because I believe in equality.

"You Can Play is doing ground breaking work in athletics. LGBT athletes are out there, and for a long time it was something that was pushed to the background. It's important for people to be able to live 'openly' no matter what their sexual orientation is and You Can Play is fighting for that."

"You Can Play is grateful to Ryan Jones for adding his support to our fight for equality in sports," said Patrick Burke, President of the You Can Play Project. "Ryan has been a long time supporter of equality, dating back to his days at Miami (University of Ohio) where he was a good friend and ally to my brother, Brendan. We hope all the young players who look up to Ryan on the ice will learn from his character and integrity off the ice.

"Ryan has been joined by fellow Oilers Jordan Eberle and Ryan Whitney in appearing in You Can Play videos. We are incredibly grateful to all three players, Steve Tambellini, Kevin Lowe, and the rest of the Oilers organization for their support."
