Oil Country came in full force to Rexall Place on Sunday for the 6th annual Oilers Locker Room Sale presented by FORD. Despite the pouring rain, more than 3,000 Oilers fans stayed warm to the idea of the event’s exclusive deals.
Fans began lining up at 7:00am and first-timer Dylan Ferguson arrived bright and early with his own equipment, bringing lawn chairs, snacks and drinks. The 15-year-old avid Oilers fan was ready to snag his favourite Oilers gear once doors opened at noon.
“I’m really excited about the chance to get Jordan Eberle’s gloves. I don’t play hockey but I want them for my collection,” said Ferguson.
Oilers fans marveled at the selection available, including exclusive collectibles, new and game-worn equipment, player-issued sticks, autographed items and special discounts from the Oilers Store.
“This is the second year we’ve come, my kids really enjoyed it last year and so we made it a point to watch for the Locker Room Sale this year,” said Crystal Engels. “The kids have been excited and saving up their piggy bank money all year to buy something special.”
Fans visiting the sale for the first time enjoyed the atmosphere and opportunity to land Oilers merchandise as well.
“This is my first Locker Room Sale and I’ve already found some great stuff; I love the Oilers and I love collecting memorabilia,” said Nolan L’Abbe. “It’s very well organized down here on the floor and it looks like everybody is having a lot of fun.”
Along with the excitement of great deals and Oilers-worn equipment, fans enjoyed a complimentary BBQ and the “Drive One for Your Community” event presented by FORD. More than 200 Locker Room Sale shoppers test drove a variety of FORD SUVs, cars, crossovers and trucks. For each test drive at Rexall Place, FORD donated $20 to the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation.
After cruising in a FORD, fans had the exclusive opportunity to tour the Oilers Dressing Room, a special experience that has never been offered before. Oilers fans were blown away with the chance to see where their hockey heroes lace up.
“I drove five hours from Lethbridge. I’ve been waiting for this day most of my life; in fact, I have goosebumps right now,” said Boyd Zacher. “Being in the Oilers Dressing Room is quite the honour, coming here today is like coming to Disneyland or like Christmas day for me.”
“We drove a pretty sweet five-litre Mustang for “Drive One for Your Community” and being in the Oilers Dressing Room now is very sweet, too,” said Doug Barrett. “There’s a lot of great history in the room and we can’t wait for more history to be made; I’m really pleased that the Oilers left extra room for the next Stanley Cup in the trophy case, that’s good foresight.”
The Locker Room Sale was buzzing as Oilers legend Grant Fuhr was on-hand for autographs. He signed autographs and chatted with Locker Room Sale fans who were all smiles after meeting the five-time Stanley Cup champion and Hockey Hall of Fame member. Autograph seekers also enjoyed time with Oilers Darcy Hordichuk and Taylor Fedun who met fans and posed for photos along with WHL Champion Oil Kings players Travis Ewanyk, Mason Geertsen, Keegan Lowe and Tristan Sieben. Fans were eager to see the Ed Chynoweth Cup and many posed for photos with the WHL Championship trophy.
With this year’s sale coming to an end, those still interested in Oilers memorabilia and specialty items can participate in the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation’s Locker Room Online Charity Auction.
