The Edmonton chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association (PHWA) has named defenceman Corey Potter as the Edmonton Oilers nominee for the 2012 Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.
The Masterton Trophy, awarded since the 1967-68 season, is given annually to the player "who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey". The PHWA chapters from all 30 NHL teams nominate one player from the team they cover and the winner of the award is selected by a poll among the 30 chapters of the PHWA at the end of the regular season schedule.
The 6'3", 206-pound defencemen is in his first full NHL season and has 20 points (4G, 16A) in 53 games with the Oilers. He is leading all Oilers defencemen in team scoring. After a strong start with the team, Potter signed a two-year contract extension on January 9, 2012.
The 28-year-old native of Lansing, Michigan had played just nine NHL games before joining the Oilers this summer. Potter spent four years at Michigan State with the Spartans of the CCHA and in 150 games, he collected 44 points (8G, 36A). He was selected by the New York Rangers in the 4th round, 133rd overall, in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.
The Masterton Trophy will be awarded at the 2012 NHL Awards broadcast live from the Encore Theater inside the Wynn Las Vegas Hotel and Casino on June 20, 2012
Edmonton Oilers hockey is presented in part by the Rexall Family of Pharmacies, Molson Canadian, ATB Financial, TELUS, Cenovus Energy and Ford.
