Future Watch: Colten Teubert
Oilers prospect Colten Teubert has his sights set on full-time NHL duty.
Teubert was acquired from the Los Angeles Kings in the trade that sent Dustin Penner to Hollywood. The Kings 1st round draft choice (13th overall) in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, has seen time with both the Oilers and Barons this season.
With Oklahoma City, he has played in 22 games, scoring seven points (2-5-7) and recording a plus-minus of +8.
In a strange twist of fate, he made his NHL debut on November 3, 2011, against the Los Angeles Kings. In his first NHL stint (20 games, one assist), Teubert learned valuable lessons that he has brought back with him to OKC.

“I think just having to be consistent with my game, play a solid 60 minutes and make minimal mistakes,” Teubert said. “Mistakes are really magnified at that level because when you do make a mistake there’s players good enough to score every time.”
In his return to the American Hockey League, Teubert realizes it’s time to hone his skills and prepare for his return to ‘The Show’.
“I’ve been trying to work on my consistency and keep playing physical down here.”
The Barons have been one of the more consistent teams in the AHL this season in the standings. Sitting atop the Western Division nearly all season. They look poised for a playoff bid and potential home-ice advantage as the season continues on. Teubert feels that the success down in OKC foreshadows good things to come for an Edmonton franchise that’s rebuilding the right way.
“I think you just look from the bottom up. From Stockton to here in Oklahoma, we’re starting to do things right and that’s going to lead towards the future with the Oilers. I think things are going well down here, so hopefully guys down here can get an opportunity in the future to bring what we’ve done down here up there and our success. I think our future is very bright.”
“You look at all the young forwards they have and good goaltending. I think it’s really exciting.”
That success is something the players look to hold on to as the year rolls on. For them, it’s not good enough winning games in the regular season. There’s a thirst for playoff hockey going around the Barons’ locker room.
“If you talk to any guy on the team, we’re not just satisfied with winning during the regular season,” Teubert confessed. “We want to bring this towards the playoffs and continue and go on a run.”

But how far can this team packed with young prospects and cagey vets make it?
“I’m not sure. I don’t know. But I think if we continue on the right path and we do the right things, we have a very good opportunity. Because we have a lot of players who have won the Championship on this team and we can use their experience.”
Teubert sees the success of the Barons this season as a reflection on himself, and feels it is directly related to an opportunity for him to return to the NHL, possibly for good.
“I think it’s going to come down to the team’s success too. You look at our team. If we start losing, it’s not going to give me a very good chance. So, I just want to help the team out as much as I can and just play my role. I really have to settle down into a real solid defensive, defenseman who plays physical and who other opposing forwards don’t like to play against.”
If the season continues the way it has and Teubert continues to improve the way he has, he’ll get that chance.
