Oilers Fantasy Hockey Forecast - 12\/13\/2011
THE WEEK THAT WAS

This past week saw the Oilers play three games all at Rexall Place, going 1-2. The week started with a disappointing 5-3 loss to Carolina on Wednesday night, a game which many fans felt the team should have won given the Hurricanes record this season. The Oilers did bounce back with a complete effort Friday night against the Colorado Avalanche though, winning the game 4-1. The momentum was short-lived however as Saturday's trip to Calgary resulted in a 3-0 loss. The Flames now lead the Battle of Alberta 3-0 this year.

Once again it was players like Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Jordan Eberle that led the way offensively during the stretch. They continue to deliver for the Oilers as they roll along at a point-per-game pace.

The team also recieved some improved play and production from players such as Sam Gagner. The emergence of some balanced scoring is a great sign for this team as they look to get players back from injury and put together a prolonged stretch of good hockey.

THE WEEK AHEAD

The coming week will see the Oil once again play three games. Heading out on the road Wednesday the team will be in Phoenix to play the Coyotes on Thursday night, followed up with San Jose on Saturday night. They will then return home for a Monday night tilt with the Detroit Red Wings.

This week may also see some players return to the lineup from injury. Forward Taylor Hall is nearing a return to action real soon and may be joined by defencemen Corey Potter. This would be two important additions and will definitely play a factor in the fantasy hockey outcome.

THURSDAY NIGHT

No more than one hour following the completion of Thursday's game vs. Phoenix, the newly introduced salaries for all our highlighted players will take effect. At this time all remaining players salaries will be reset to their real cap hit values.

Here are this week’s salary amendments:

SAM GAGNER ($2M > $4M)

Sam Gagner has found his game and it comes as great news for the Oilers coaching staff and fans. Coming off an early season injury, Sam has struggled to find his scoring touch. That no longer seems to be an issue!

During the past week, Gagner put up four points (2G,2A) in the three games. He is climbing his was up the Oilers scoring list and has now put up 193 fantasy points.

With his confidence back, Gagner is now enjoying increased ice-time as well as powerplay time. If these things continue, Sam will turn around his season and be a valuable fantasy option.

BEN EAGER ($1M > $2M)

So we all know Eager is no offensive powerhouse, he is however starting to find the back of the net. Eager played a really good stretch of hockey over the past week, his best as an Oiler.

Ben was able to pot goals in back-to-back games against Carolina and Colorado, his first two of the season. Eager is starting to look more comfortable out there and that could lead to a few more goals along the way.

While Eager will never be a top-flight fantasy pick, he may be worth a late look to fill out a roster. If he can continue to chip in some offence to go along with dishing out big hits, he'll be of some value .

ALES HEMSKY ($4M > $2M)

Sometimes it's hard to figure out a player like Ales Hemsky. There is no doubting the talent that he possesses, but sometimes he just doesn't seem to deliver at that level.

That's exactly what's going on with Hemsky right now. WIth zero points and a minus 2 rating during these past three games, Hemsky just isn't bringing the consistency needed. With 11 points and 161 fantasy points on the year, he has been passed by players like Sam Gagner in terms of production. This makes his 4 million price tag a little too high.

All this being said, a player of Hemsky's talent can put up points at any time. So 2 Million may be just the price that makes Ales worth buying.

INJURY UPDATE

Taylor Hall: Getting close to a return.
Cam Barker: 3 months with an ankle injury.
Corey Potter: Getting close to a return
