An in-depth look at Tuesday's 2-1 setback at the Saddledome

Two late third period goals by the Calgary Flames led the home side to a 2-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers at the Saddledome on Tuesday night.

The Oilers struck first with a goal 6:42 into the opening period. Tom Gilbert took a feed from Corey Potter at the top of the left faceoff circle and teed it up, beating Flames netminder Miikka Kiprusoff with a one-timer to give Edmonton the lead.

With less than six minutes to play in the third, Jay Bouwmeester tied the game with a wrister between the hash marks. His shot went over the shoulder of Dubnyk and tied the game at 1-1.

About 90 seconds later, the Flames took the lead when Alex Tanguay pounced on a loose puck during a mad goalmouth scramble in front to slip the puck past a sprawling Devan Dubnyk to seal the 2-1 win.

With Edmonton leading 1-0 late in the third period and the Flames pressing, Calgary ended up scoring to tie the game. With 5:57 to play, Jay Bouwmeester wired a shot from between the hash marks to tie it up at 1-1. 1:29 later, Tanguay scored the winner.

Early in the first period, Tom Gilbert took a feed from Corey Potter and teed it up from the top of the left faceoff circle, beating Flames netminder Miikka Kiprusoff with a one-timer on a beauty play to give Edmonton a 1-0 lead.

Miikka Kiprusoff wasn't very busy early on but late he was brilliant and possibly preserved a point for his team with an unbelievable save off Anton Lander on a redirected point shot in the dying seconds. 12 of his 24 saves were in the final frame.

Lennart Petrell played his best game as an Oiler tonight. In 16:23 of ice time, he blocked three shots, led both teams with a total of five hits and also won the only faceoff he had to take.


Last season, the Calgary Flames were 9-1-1 in home games against an opponent that played the previous night in either Edmonton or Vancouver.
