Trailing 1-0 late in the third period, the Oilers got the spark they needed when Ryan Nugent-Hopkins tied the game with 4:55 to play. Nugent-Hopkins was able to find a loose puck in the slot and slide a backhand past Penguins netminder, Brent Johnson. This gave the Oil the momentum they needed as they would go on to win their season opener in a shootout, 2-1.

Coming up second for the Oilers in the shootout, Ales Hemsky was able to avoid a Brent Johnson poke-check and lift the puck top corner. The goal was another demonstration of the patience fans have come to expect from Hemsky, and turned out to be the eventual shootout winner.

Watch the shootout goal

Playing in his first regular season NHL game, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins was sensational in helping the Oilers to 2-1 win. Logging 17:04 of ice-time, Nugent-Hopkins was dangerous throughout the contest with a number of slick passes and a total of three shots on net. He would score the Oilers' lone regulation goal and finish the game +1.

Although his strong game won't appear on the scoresheet, defencemen Ladislav Smid was a rock defensively for the Oilers. In a game that was closely contested from start to finish, Smid was fearless coming back from injury for the Oilers. With 21:07 of ice-time, Smid would lead all players in this contest with 6 blocked shots while also killing ten minutes in penalties.

At 15:52 of the second period, the hit of the game came from a rather unlikely source. Carrying the puck in the Oilers zone, Penguins forward, Pascal Dupuis was rocked by the Oilers, Ales Hemsky.

With this win in the season opener, head coach, Tom Renney now has an 8-0 record in season opening games for his career.

" Going into the game I was really nervous but I tried to use that to my advantage."
