Rock and Wrap It Up returns to Rexall
Last season, Edmonton's Food Bank received more than 9,300 pounds of food from teh Rock and Wrap It Up Food Recovery Program.
The Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation (EOCF) and Northlands were proud to kick off the second season of Rock and Wrap It Up with a 993kg food donation, collected over the summer months, to Edmonton’s Food Bank.

Last season, the National Hockey League and all 30 of its member teams joined forces with Rock and Wrap It Up to help fight hunger in North America. The program helps to keep excess food from going to waste by donating prepared but not served concession food from Oilers and Oil Kings games along with Rexall events to Edmonton’s Food Bank.

“Edmonton’s Food Bank is such a vital part of our city and is utilized by many organizations we support, including Inner City High School,” said Natalie Minckler, EOCF Executive Director. “The Rock and Wrap It Up program was a natural fit for our organization, allowing us to use our resources to fight hunger in Edmonton.”

"Last season Edmonton's Food Bank received more than 9,300 pounds of food from the Rock and Wrap It Up Food Recovery program,” added Marjorie Bencz, CM, Executive Director of Edmonton’s Food Bank. “

Thanks to the support of the Oilers and the partners involved with this program we are able to continue to provide to more than 190 community agencies serving 300,000 snacks and meals each month of the year."

Including Edmonton’s total from 2010-11, the NHL Food Recovery Initiative was able to divert 105 tons of food waste from landfills last season and provide over 160,000 meals, which earned them the honour of being named twice to the prestigious Official Shortlist for the 2011 Beyond Sports Awards as a finalist in both the Sport for Environment and Federation of the Year categories.

With pre-season winding down and the regular season on the horizon, the EOCF and Northlands are looking forward to making many more deliveries to Edmonton’s Food Bank this year.

ABOUT THE FOUNDATION
Established in 2001, the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation (EOCF) continues the Oilers legacy of giving back by contributing its unique resources and financial support to charitable organizations that serve the communities of Northern Alberta.  Led by a dedicated community Board of Directors, the EOCF has developed a number of programs and partnerships that target those who need it most.

The EOCF raises its funds through a variety of fundraising initiatives that take place during Oilers home games and the generous contributions of Oilers fans and friends.

The Foundation gives back in excess of $1 million annually to charitable organizations registered with Revenue Canada whose programs support education and health and wellness for youth throughout Oil Country.
