Stollery Champion Child
Ryan Smyth presents Drew with a signed Oilers jersey.
On a crisp Monday morning in September, Drew Husch and his classmates from Ardrossan Junior Senior High played hooky from school, trading in their math books for a chance to spend the morning at Rexall Place watching an Oilers practice and celebrating Drew’s amazing story.

Drew, a die-hard Edmonton Oilers fan and this year’s Stollery Champion Child presented by Walmart, has battled with Cystic Fibrosis all his life and eventually underwent a double lung transplant in 2008. Through it all, Drew and his family have remained positive and emulated true champions.

Seen as a bright, persevering and active young boy, Drew will represent all of the kids at the Stollery Children’s Hospital and act as an ambassador to tell their stories.

“This young boy has been through so much in his life already, yet Drew is always on top of the world,” said Jan Archbold, VP of Marketing and Communications for the Stollery Children’s Hospital. “It’s great that he has the opportunity to be here today.”

In the spirit of the day’s champion theme, Edmonton Oilers forward Ryan Smyth presented Drew with a signed jersey and had a meet and greet presented by the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation with his classmates.

“My wife and I have been involved with the Stollery for a number of years,” Smyth said. “It means a lot for me to be back in Edmonton and able to get out and do these types of things.”

For Drew, the overwhelming love and support from his family and friends as well as the chance to meet his favourite player made for a once in a lifetime experience.

“It’s crazy, I can’t even think straight right now. What an awesome day!”
