The Oilers Event Team and Community Partnership staff hit the road this weekend, heading to Athabasca for the Edmonton Oilers Hockey Clinic presented by Cenovus Energy. For the third consecutive year, the Oilers partnered with Cenovus to bring this unique program to young players across Oil Country.

The weekend long event kicked off on Friday, May 13 at the Athabasca Regional Multiplex where hundreds of local attendees took in the warm weather by enjoying a complimentary BBQ, fun and games provided by the Oilers Event Team and a chance to meet Oilers Alumni member and colour commentator for the Oilers Sportsnet Broadcasts, Louie DeBrusk.

Members of the Oilers Octane were also on site along with the ever-popular Fanboni, which gave fans an opportunity to have their photo taken with a custom built Oilers Zamboni.

Hundreds of kids signed up for the clinic through the Oilers website and 90 were randomly selected and invited to attend the no-cost development weekend in Athabasca.

"We really appreciate the support we receive from northern Alberta residents. This hockey clinic, which is possible through our partnership with the Oilers, is just one way we give back to communities in our operating areas," says David Goldie, Vice President, Greater Pelican Assets. "It’s a great opportunity for us to interact directly with people and bring a once-in-a lifetime experience for most of these kids."

In addition to teaching hockey skills to young players, the clinic also hosted a forum for parents aimed at keeping the big picture in perspective. This session reminded all who attended that respect and fun need to remain at the forefront of hockey in order for the sport to be enjoyed by all who participate.

Special guest Oilers forward, Steve MacIntyre arrived at the clinic on Saturday afternoon to meet the players and host a public autograph session with fans.

“This clinic is a great opportunity to come up here, meet some kids and be a part of the community,” said MacIntrye.

Along with the weekend’s festivities, the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation (EOCF) presented a donation to KidSport Alberta in support of young athletes in the Athabasca Region. The Oilers Hockey Clinic gave the Oilers and Cenovus Energy a chance to promote and grow the love of hockey across Oil Country.
