SWEDEN VS SWITZERLAND
With Viktor Fasth in net for Sweden and Leonardo Genoni manning the Swiss pipes, the game got underway.
With the exception of a pair of decent scoring chances at both ends of the ice, the first period was uneventful. Four consecutive infractions kept Swiss penalty killers busy, but Sweden couldn't capitalize.
After 20 minutes, Sweden held a 9-7 shot lead in the scoreless game.
The second period produced more shots but, once again, no goals. Three Swedish penalties gave Switzerland a taste of power-play, however goaltenders Fasth and Genoni stood strong.
Two more Swedish penalties opened up the third period, including a holding minor to Paajarvi and tripping minor to Mikael Backlund.
After Backlund completed his two minutes, he went on the offensive: receiving a feed from Staffan Kronwall, the forward skated up the left wing and wired a slapshot past Genoni for the first goal of the game.
Back-to-back Swiss penalties kept the red team from countering with a goal of their own, and with just over one minute remaining in regulation, they pulled Genoni and iced six skaters.
Backlund made the most of the opportunity, firing home an empty-netter to seal a 2-0 Swedish victory.
Paajarvi finished the game with two penalty minutes and four shots in 14:30.
