Discounts, monthly winners & more highlight this week's Forecast

Quite literally, we’ve now entered the stretch drive. The NHL’s Trade Deadline has passed, and the remaining 20 games are ready to be challenged with a set roster, now void of one of the Oilers’ leading scorers. While Dustin Penner is gone, replacing his production will be a collaborative effort.

This week, the goal is to load your roster to help regain the lost production, in addition to covering for a sputtering offensive game. The Oilers endured an up and down week, both record-wise and on the game-night scoreboard. To help alleviate that challenge or, at least, bring a new dynamic to the scoring production, this week will feature discounts for all our highlighted players.

The goal is to provide a barn-burner offensive atmosphere, so choose wisely as each pick will be critical to your weekly success.

And, of course, with the calendar turning to a brand new month, our newest pair of monthly winners will be announced. We’ll get to that in a moment.

TONIGHT AT 11:00PM

No more than one hour following the completion of tonight's game vs. Nashville, the salaries of this week’s highlighted players will be amended, while Shawn Horcoff's salary will be reverted back to his standard cap-hit of $6 million for the next seven days.

Here are this week’s salary amendments:

ALES HEMSKY ($6M > $3M)

After what was surely a nervous deadline day, Ales Hemsky remains part of the Oilers roster, much to the delight of many in Oil Country (especially his loyal Fantasy Hockey owners).

Last week, Hemsky was highlighted with a raise to the most expensive cap-hit of the season, so the opposite spectrum this week will certainly put an interesting spin on the competition.

With an offensive game that shows no signs of slowing, Hemsky continues to produce at an incredible clip. Edmonton’s leading point-getter has accumulated 42 points in 46 games this season, as well as firm position among the Fantasy leaders, despite missing 17 games this season.

Although Hemsky has struggled with consistency throughout this career, it now appears to be a thriving component of his game. To reward that, the dynamic winger will be discounted this week to help balance the offensive spread.

TAYLOR HALL ($5M > $3M)

Naturally, Edmonton’s leading goal-scorer and Fantasy Hockey leader has to be included in some respect. Taylor Hall continues to produce, with 21 goals now highlighting a tremendous rookie campaign.

As has been mentioned in the past, Hall brings a variety of skill-sets that all contribute to his outstanding resume. Goal scoring, shots on goal, hits, even-strength and power-play production; the list goes on, as the 19-year old does everything imaginable to help his club.

Like the previous two, Hall will be discounted to help alleviate the stress of putting together a balanced lineup. But regardless of the cost, Hall has always been a lock to produce on your roster. Get him into your lineup.

GILBERT BRULE ($2M > $1M)

Despite missing nearly two months of action, Gilbert Brule is currently riding a three-game goal-scoring streak. After making his triumphant return to the lineup the other night vs. Boston, Brule notched his seventh goal of the season and displayed an incredible physical presence to help lead the Oilers in a number of categories.

Brule was also rewarded a three-star selection, giving him a total of 31 Fantasy points and the highest number among his teammates due to the aforementioned areas of success.

Like Hemsky, Brule has struggled with consistency at times. If Brule wants to remain in the lineup on a nightly basis, he needs to bring that level of production and intensity into each game. At the moment, he looks poised to do so. Only time will tell, but in the meantime, make sure to include Brule in your lineup as we enter a new week.

WE HAVE A WINNER

In addition to our year-end prizes, we recognize the efforts of our monthly leaders in the following categories: Total points and top average points for the month of February.

February – Total Points:  Following a few months in which he was held off the winning leaderboard, slim2001 returns to the win column with a stunning total of 1644 points throughout the month of February. puckster99 challenged heard, but his 1625 total fell short to our overall leader.

February – Top Average Points: While one of our winners has developed into a seasoned professional of winning performances, cogs82 emerged as a first-time winner for the top average point-total in the month of February. This season, most of the average-point races have been tight, often separated by only a few decimal points. In this case, cogs82 ran away with the competition, topping our second-place finisher IVlack by nearly six points.

On behalf of the entire edmontonoilers.com staff, I would like to say congratulations to each of our winners! Both slim2001 and cogs82 will receive a signed 8x10 of one of their favourite Oilers players.

We will be in contact with both of you shortly to arrange the delivery of your prizes.

Remember, monthly prizes will be handed out throughout the regular season, in addition to the year-end prizes at the conclusion of the campaign. With a greater discrepancy in point averages, combined with the ongoing sequence of salary amendments, there's plenty of time for everyone to make their move and challenge for the top spot in one of our winning categories.
