Oilers Fantasy Hockey Forecast - 01\/25\/2011
With only a few games left to make your mark, January will soon be wrapping up and another round of fantastic prizes will be awarded to our monthly winners. In recognizing that all our players have given an incredible effort this season, another brand of appreciation was required to showcase the amazing Fantasy Hockey talent that graces our website.

Perhaps you’ve noticed already, but some new additions have been made to your profile pages for all to see. Eight new collector badges have been unveiled, which will be awarded when you complete certain milestones throughout the regular season.

In a game where bragging rights will always be seen in a prominent role, the public display of your accomplishments should be a nice addition. Wear them proudly, players.

In order to receive these badges, however, strong performances are required to achieve that next level of greatness. This week, although short due to the All-Star break, could be pivotal as we conclude another month of the season.

Last week, we highlighted a trio of rookies as they looked to put a stamp on some impressive performances leading up to last week’s Forecast. All three delivered, but freshman blueliner Jeff Petry had, perhaps, the best week of all.

Since his call-up on December 27, Petry has now accumulated an impressive 112 points and is showing no signs of slowing down. Particularly with his salary retreating back to its standard (and modest) cap-hit of only $1 million later this evening, keep an eye on the motivated rearguard as the weeks continue.

With only one game on the schedule this week, our salary amendments will feature a different tone as we look to create a shake-up in the month’s final week.

THE COUNTDOWN

No more than one hour following the completion of tonight’s game, the salaries of this week’s highlighted players will be amended, while last week’s players (Reddox, Petry and Hall) will be reverted back to their standard cap-hits.

Here are this week’s salary amendments:

DUSTIN PENNER ($4M > $3M)

After leading the team in goal-scoring last season, Dustin Penner has often been seen as the forgotten man in Edmonton due to the influx of young talent up front. Even with the ever-increasing excitement over Taylor Hall and others, Penner leads the team again this season in both respects with 30 points in 47 games played. Translating to Fantasy numbers, Penner has collected 447 points and has established himself as one of the game’s most reliable players.

Now having been put in a more prominent role alongside Shawn Horcoff and the aforementioned Hall, Penner will be counted on to produce offence at an even higher pace. With the creative offensive instincts in Hall on his opposite wing, combined with the grinding and defensive ability of Horcoff in the middle, his linemates should provide a nice complement to an already motivated Penner.

Although Penner has had success this season on the Fantasy leaderboard, a high cap-hit was often the difference-maker for his inclusion in your lineup. This week, consider that a problem of the past. Penner will be discounted to provide some more flexibility up front.

ANDREW COGLIANO ($1M > $2M)

It’s all about confidence. Right now, Andrew Cogliano has it and is currently enjoying his best stretch of hockey in the past two seasons. After struggling to find consistency in the early portions of 2010-11, the new line combinations and greater responsibility on the offensive side of the puck has helped the speedster come alive in recent weeks.

With 10 points in his past 14 games, Cogliano looks to have turned a corner of sorts. Earlier in the season, many stayed away due to his unreliable offensive numbers and struggle in the faceoff circle. For now, at least, both have turned the tide as Cogliano is making a mid-season push up the leaderboard.

Now having collected 314 points on the season, the 23-year old is making a case for his selection. This could be a turning point in Cogliano’s season, so take note of his recent hot stretch and give some consideration to his inclusion.

SHAWN HORCOFF ($6M > $4M)

The captain is back. Shawn Horcoff recently made his return to the lineup, alongside Taylor Hall and Dustin Penner, and has looked excellent as he looks to return to the offensive form he enjoyed before being sidelined with his knee ailment.

Horcoff can be counted on in a number of different areas, which makes him a valuable addition to your game-night roster. With the team encountering some tough times of late, the ability to produce high Fantasy numbers in a difficult environment is crucial to your success.

Without question, Horcoff is an investment. But with only one game this week, Horcoff will be heavily discounted to provide more flexibility on the team’s number one offensive trio.
