Edmonton’s Inner City High gets a new home.

Edmonton, AB – The Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation (EOCF) today announced the purchase of a building which will be the new home of Inner City High School. Today’s announcement is the continuation of the work the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation has undertaken during the past four years in conjunction with Inner City Youth Development Association.

“I’m very pleased to be able to make this announcement today. Our Foundation has recognized for some time that Inner City High is a worthwhile cause; together with our players and their wives we lend support in many forms,” said EOCF Executive Director Natalie Minckler. “We have spent considerable time and effort to find a new home for these students and teachers. Their previous location is being demolished, and a new location is required, and the last thing they need to do is to worry about finding a new home.”

Accredited by Alberta Learning, Inner City High School offers youth an academic and arts-based alternative to the traditional school setting.  Many of the students that attend Inner City High come from divergent cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds which often create additional challenges to their success. This facility offers unique and customized learning solutions that sets these students up for success.

“Our partnership with the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation and the Oilers organization is a major key to the continued success of our students. Without this support many of Edmonton’s urban youth would not have the chance to continue making positive changes in their lives” said Inner City High Principal Dr. Joe Cloutier. “We are eager to move into our new home and take advantage of all the features this building has to offer.”

The new facility just northeast of downtown will undergo renovations in the coming months to create an environment that specifically caters to these students. The new facility, which formerly was home to the Native Friendship Centre, will accommodate growth for the school and accommodations which are much more modern and functional than the current building.  This unique educational environment will also provide counseling and healthcare rooms, and an Elder’s room.  The school is moving to the new location in mid December. Funds raised in the recent Winner’s Choice Lottery will be part of the funding for this new facility.

The Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation (EOCF) is dedicated to building strong and vibrant communities by contributing its resources and financial support to charitable organizations that serve the residents of Oil Country. The EOCF has worked to change lives in Oil Country through their support of a host of deserving organizations. The Foundation gives back in excess of $1 million annually to registered charities throughout Central and Northern Alberta who focus their activities on youth, education and health and wellness.

Edmonton Oilers hockey is presented in part by the Rexall Family of Pharmacies, Molson Canadian, ATB Financial and Ford.
