While Oil Country is known for its hockey, it’s also unfortunately known for its harsh winters.  In an effort to keep Edmontonians warm this winter, the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation joined forces with the United Way and Page the Cleaners this morning to help launch their Coats for Kids & Families campaign.

In respect to last year’s total of over 17,700 donated coats, the United Way raised their target for 2010 to 19,000. Helping to reach this new goal, Edmonton Oilers Assistant Coach Kelly Buchberger and his wife Carla joined the cause as official ambassadors of the United Way program.

“Having lived in Edmonton for many years, Kelly and I understand the need to keep children and their families bundled up this winter. We’ve received so much support from the community and this is just a small way we can help give back,” said Carla Buchberger.

With two children of their own, Kelly and Carla would never dream of sending their kids out the door without proper winter gear, which is why, they say, we have to prevent other children and families from doing the same.

“Having supporters like Kelly and Carla Buchberger through the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation is so important to our community initiatives because it shows the importance of the goals the United Way is trying to reach,” said Kristy Jacklin, United Way Program Coordinator.

Gently worn coats can be dropped off to any Page the Cleaner location in Edmonton, St. Albert, and Sherwood Park before November 30, 2010. Coats will be cleaned and then sent to United Way’s InKind Centre where they will be sorted and distributed to people in need. After November 30, coats can be dropped off at the main Page the Cleaner location at 11416 142 Street.

ABOUT THE FOUNDATION
Established in 2001, the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation (EOCF) continues the Oilers legacy of giving back by contributing its unique resources and financial support to charitable organizations that serve the communities of Northern Alberta.  Led by a dedicated community Board of Directors, the EOCF has developed a number of programs and partnerships that target those who need it most.

The EOCF raises its funds through a variety of fundraising initiatives that take place during Oilers home games and the generous contributions of Oilers fans and friends.

The Foundation gives back in excess of $1 million annually to charitable organizations registered with Revenue Canada whose programs support education and health and wellness for youth throughout Oil Country.
