“We are extremely humbled by the enthusiasm and passion that Joey has brought to his job and our organization over the last couple decades,” said Oilers President Patrick LaForge. “He’s one of our longest serving members and a true icon for the team.”
The highly anticipated Joey Moss Cup, hitting Rexall Place on Sept. 21, 2010 at 7:00p.m, honours Joey and his numerous contributions to the Oilers over the years.
Born with Down’s Syndrome, Joey was introduced to the team by Wayne Gretzky and can be seen helping other members of the Oilers training staff on a daily basis from the start of training camp until the final whistle each spring. He also can’t be missed belting out the National Anthem at every home game in his customary seat behind the Oilers’ bench.
As an integral part of the Oilers, Joey received the NHL Alumni Association’s “Seventh Man Award” in 2007, which is presented to NHL members “whose behind-the-scene efforts make a difference in the lives of others.” Joey has also accepted the Mayor’s Award from City of Edmonton mayor, Stephen Mandel, in recognition of the Oilers commitment to persons with disabilities.
The Oilers choose to acknowledge Joey’s hard work and dedication on an annual basis by presenting the Joey Moss Cup to the winners of the intra-squad tournament.
General admission tickets for this year’s Joey Moss Cup on Sept. 21 held at Rexall Place are only $10 and are available online at edmontonoilers.com.
In recognition of his role with the Oilers, proceeds from the game will be presented to the Winnifred Steward Association in support of Joey’s Home and to the University of Alberta in support of the Golden Bears Hockey Program.
