SWEDES DOUSE DANES
The Swedes were heavy favourites heading into the game, but the Danes put up a good fight.
After battling back and forth through the first 15 minutes, Sweden's Marcus Nilsson got his club on the scoreboard. The Tre Kronor added two goals in the second before Denmark stole one back.
With less than seven minutes remaining in the game, Omark got in on the action. After sneaking up the left wing, the 23-year-old forward caught a crisp pass from Niklas Persson and flipped it past goalie Patrick Galbraith.
Morten Madsen got a second goal for Denmark before the final buzzer, but it wasn't enough to salvage their medal hopes.
Omark's goal was his first of the tournament, bringing his seven-game total to three points. He now sits at +1 with six penalty minutes and 13 shots on goal.
Fellow Oiler Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson, who leads the team and sits second in tournament scoring with eight points, posted one shot and finished -1 in the game.
"We were the better team and we knew it," Paajarvi said to the IIHF after the match. "We never gave them enough space to execute."
With the victory, Sweden heads to the semi-finals, where they will face the Czech Republic on Saturday, May 22 at 6:00am MT. In their only previous encounter of the tournament, the Czechs edged the Swedes 2-1 last Thursday. (
RUSSIAN CRUISE CONTINUES
In the next set of quarterfinal games, the result wasn't so cheery for Oilers fans. With prospect Jordan Eberle and goaltender Devan Dubnyk on the roster, Team Canada faced the formidable Russians, who carried an imposing 25-game winning streak into the game.
The Canadians were coming off two losses, and the Russians took advantage of the shaky squad. With five goals through 60 minutes, Russia powered their way to a confident 5-2 victory and a spot in the semi-finals vs. Germany Saturday.
John Tavares and Matt Duchene scored Canada's two goals, while Eberle registered two shots and finished +1 in 10:05 on the ice. The 20-year-old forward leaves the tournament with one goal and three assists in four games.
After being summoned by Team Canada last Friday, Dubnyk departs with practice time on his resume and a German stamp in his passport.
