Oilers prospects Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson and Linus Omark had their sights set on a preliminary-round sweep with Team Sweden, but the Czech Republic sabotaged the mission by snagging a 2-1 win Thursday.

After Tomas Rolinek opened the scoring for the Czechs only 54 seconds into the game, Paajarvi evened things up four minutes into the middle frame with a shot that bumbled through goalie Tomas Vokoun.

The goal would turn out to be Sweden's lone of the game. Five minutes later, Petr Hubacek made it 2-1 for the Czechs, a lead they would hold until the final buzzer.

Paajarvi's goal was his second of the tournament, following a three-point showing in Sweden's tournament opener vs. Norway.

With four points in three games, he is among six players tied for fourth in the tournament's scoring race. Norway's Patrick Thoresen (2g + 4a), Switzerland's Martin Pluss (3g + 2a) and Czech's Jaromir Jagr (2g + 3a) lead the group.

In the game's final 30 seconds, Paajarvi took two penalty minutes for bursting off the bench and dragging down a Czech player who was about to break in on an open net.

The 19-year-old forward finished even in the game, while Omark finished -1 and with one shot on net. Omark is second in Oilers tournament scoring after posting two assists in Sweden's last game vs. France.

Despite losing to the Czechs and finishing even with them and Norway in the Group C standings, Sweden came out on top thanks to tie breaking regulations. As such, Sweden's first qualification round test is vs. Latvia Friday, May 14 at 12:15pm MT.

Earlier that day, Canada (who finished second in Group B behind Switzerland) takes on Norway. The puck drops for that game at 8:15am MT.

Jordan Eberle
For Oilers fans, the Canada-Norway game is especially interesting because it will mark prospect Jordan Eberle's World Championship debut. Eberle, 19, is Canada's all-time leading scorer in the World Junior Championships and has been an alternate for the 2010 men's team up until this point.

The two other Oilers currently playing in the World Championships are Taylor Chorney and Ryan Potulny. After USA's loss to Finland Wednesday, the Americans are out of medal contention and have been forced into the relegation round. Team USA's next game is Saturday, May 15 vs Kazakhstan at 8:15am MT.
