Playing in their first-ever World Championships, young Oilers Taylor Chorney & Ryan Potulny will be cherishing memories rather than a medal when they return to their respective homes in Minnesota next week.

After dropping their first two games of the tournament in overtime to Germany and Denmark, Team USA needed a win over Finland Wednesday to stay in the hunt.

Despite securing the opening goal courtesy of Calgary Flame David Moss, the Americans couldn't restrain the Finns and suffered a 3-2 loss.

Potulny finished -1 and registered one shot in 17:12 on ice, while Chorney played only 2:50 in the first period.

The loss forced the Americans into the relegation round, where they will face the last-place teams from each of the other three groups. Italy is the other confirmed team, while final rankings for Group A and Group C have yet to be decided.

In other weird Wednesday news, heavy favourites Canada were whipped by Switzerland 4-1. The Swiss crafted a two-goal lead in the first period before John Tavares got Canada on the board at 14:29.

Despite being outshot 32-18, Switzerland added two more goals to secure an impressive undefeated record through the preliminary round.

Canadian captain Ryan Smyth missed the game due to a foot injury, and Oilers fans can expect prospect Jordan Eberle to make his World Championships debut in the first game of the qualification round Friday. Canada will play the third-place team from Group C, likely the Czech Republic or Norway.

Thursday, Oilers prospects Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson and Linus Omark join Sweden's hunt to finish first in Group C with a win over the Czechs. The puck drops at 12:15pm MT.
