Team Sweden was the heavy favourite heading into their second game of the 2010 World Hockey Championship in Germany Tuesday, and although France put up a valiant fight, they couldn't create another tournament upset.

Swedish forward Linus Omark, Edmonton's fourth-round pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, played an important role in the game, tallying two assists to help Sweden secure a 3-2 win.

Late in the first period, Omark got the puck on French goalie Eddy Ferhi, enabling Carl Gunnarsson to prod home the rebound for the opening goal.

The Swedes doubled their lead early in the middle frame thanks to a slapshot by Jonas Andersson. Then, at 7:44, Omark registered his second assist by setting up Johan Harju.

The Oilers prospect added two penalty minutes to his resume by taking a tripping minor near the game's midway point, but France was unable to capitalize on the powerplay.

In the third period, the French found the back on the net courtesy of Yorick Treille and Luc Tardif. The rally came too late, however, and Sweden held on for a 3-2 win to secure a spot in the Qualification Round.

With his two points, Omark moves into a three-way tie for third in Sweden's scoring race. Fellow Oilers prospect Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson is tied for first on the team and 10th in the tournament after registering one goal and two assists Sunday vs. Norway.

The next action for Oilers players comes Wednesday, May 12 when Taylor Chorney and Ryan Potulny participate in Team USA's battle vs. Finland. After surprising losses to Germany and Denmark, the Americans are still looking for their first win of the tournament.

Also at 12:15 MT Wednesday, Canada takes on Switzerland. With Canadian captain Ryan Smyth out of the tournament with a foot injury, team management may activate alternate Jordan Eberle for the Qualification Round. Eberle, 19, was Edmonton's first-round pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft and was a star player for Canada in two World Junior Championships.
