My summer so far
TIME TO UNWIND
I’ve had plenty of time for rest since then so I feel a lot better. The end of the season is the best time to get out, go somewhere warm, and relax. It’s frustrating when you don’t make the playoffs for the past three years, so you’ve got to get away from hockey as much as you can when it’s over.
For me right now, I’m just starting to work out and reflect on what happened this past year. That’s the frustrating part. Once you make playoffs, anything can happen but now you just have to think about it for three months.
I’ve started my regular workouts again. My usual workout routine is Monday to Friday from about 9am to 1pm. I take the rest of the day off and actually just got out to the golf course for the first time a few days ago. My back was cleared so it was nice to be able to swing the golf club again. I had very low expectations as far as my golf game goes but I actually played a lot better than I thought I would.
I’ll be spending most of the summer in Madison, Wisconsin with my college friend Adam Burish who plays for the Chicago Blackhawks. I have a wedding to go to here in Madison and then two more in Regina and Halifax so that will break up the summer a bit. I don’t like travelling that much in the summer but I’m at that point in my life where a lot of my friends are starting to get married so it’s nice to get together with everyone for that.
RENOVATIONS & ROOMMATES
As for getting back to Edmonton, I stuck around for a few weeks after the end of the season and ended up buying a house. The whole process is a little bit frustrating but it’s also exciting and I got lucky. It’s perfect for me. It’s a little bungalow and unfortunately the two kids (Sam and Andrew) won’t be living with me next year. I’m looking forward to living by myself but hopefully I don’t get too bored and lonely. It’ll be an adjustment for sure.
Actually, I think they’re ready to leave the nest. I asked if they wanted to stay with me but it makes more sense for me to get my own place. Their families are always in town too, so with only three bedrooms it could get pretty cramped. If they move to a new place next season I hope they end up living by me. There’s a spot pretty close that I told them about. I get bored pretty easily so I’d probably lose my mind if I had to sit in my house all day and do nothing.
The house is really great but there’s a lot of work to do in the basement. I’m going to get it worked on over the summer and hopefully MTV Cribs can swing by to do a feature on it. Feel free to bring that up with them if you have connections.
I’m coming back to Edmonton in July to take possession and that’s when I’ll have some people come in and get new carpet and flooring and the entertainment center downstairs. It’s tough waiting for it. I just want it all to be done so I can go into my own house and relax. But I guess it’s nice to have all summer to think about my house and what I want it to be like without having to sit around while it’s getting done. Kinda sucks if you’re not there in case they need you, but it’s all over the phone and I’ve got great people working with me.
I can’t write a blog without mentioning movies so I’ll just say that I’ve seen pretty much every movie in theatres. I saw Angels & Demons a while ago but I thought the book was a lot better than the movie. It was probably the best book I’ve read and I’d recommend it to anyone. Usually I get bored after a while but that book was just awesome.
Speaking of books, I just started this new book called The Sign by Raymond Khoury and it seems pretty interesting. Jason Strudwick told me to read this other cook called I’m Too Fat to Fish which is supposed to be pretty funny. I like to bounce back and forth between serious books and not so serious ones so maybe I’ll read that one next.
Everyone likes to tease me about my shoe fetish but I have to say that summer is pretty slow for shoes. I’m wearing sandals every day and living in Madison there aren’t too many big stores to go shoe shopping. I’m just going to focus on working out and enjoying life here. That’s what summer is all about.
Hope your summer is going well too.
