Biggest deals of the '09 deadline
Pittsburgh Penguins acquire F Bill Guerin from the New York Islanders for a conditional draft choice in 2009 -- It took Isles GM Garth Snow longer than expected to unload Guerin, but the former captain was finally dealt to Pittsburgh, where he helped Sidney Crosby & Co. unseat the Detroit Red Wings as Stanley Cup champs. Pittsburgh's playoff run allowed the Islanders to acquire a third-round draft choice for Guerin's services. The veteran forward had 7 goals and 8 assists in 24 playoff games.
Carolina Hurricanes acquire F Jussi Jokinen from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for F Wade Brookbank, D Josef Melichar and fourth-round pick in 2009 -- This deal was struck nearly a full month before the deadline and probably didn't turn many heads at the time, but 'Canes GM Jim Rutherford deserves a pat on the back for this one. Not only did Jokinen help Carolina go on a Cinderella run to the Eastern Conference Final, but he's also now in the midst of his first 20-goal season in the NHL.
Pittsburgh Penguins acquire Fs Chris Kunitz and Eric Tangradi from the Anaheim Ducks for D Ryan Whitney -- Pens GM Ray Shero was focused on improving his group of top-six forwards before the deadline, and he did just that with the additions of Kunitz and Guerin. After notching 18 points in 20 regular-season games, Kunitz added another 14 points in the postseason to help the Penguins win their first Stanley Cup since 1992. Whitney, meanwhile, has been a terrific addition for Anaheim. He helped the Ducks stun the San Jose Sharks in the opening round of the 2009 Stanley Cup Playoffs and is 4-24-28 for the Ducks this season.
Calgary Flames acquire Olli Jokinen and a third-round draft choice in 2009 from the Phoenix Coyotes in exchange for Fs Matthew Lombardi and Brandon Prust, along with a first-round pick in 2010 -- Flames GM Darryl Sutter was hoping to find a long-term answer at center to skate alongside Jarome Iginla, but Jokinen would last roughly a year in Calgary before being shipped to the New York Rangers. Lombardi, meanwhile, has played a major role in the Coyotes' resurgence, as he has 13 goals and 21 assists in 59 games this season.
Philadelphia Flyers acquire F Daniel Carcillo from the Phoenix Coyotes for F Scottie Upshall and second-round draft pick in 2011 -- Both teams have benefited from this deal, as Carcillo has provided the Flyers with some more muscle, while Upshall was enjoying a tremendous season in Phoenix (32 points in 49 games) before suffering a knee injury in January.
Chicago Blackhawks acquire F Samuel Pahlsson, D Logan Stephenson and a conditional draft choice in 2009 from the Anaheim Ducks for D James Wisniewski and Petri Kontiola -- Looking for a defensive-minded forward to help compliment his offense, then-Blackhawks GM Dale Tallon surrendered a young talent in Wisniewski for Pahlsson's services. Pahlsson appeared in 30 games between the regular season and playoffs before bolting for Columbus last summer.
San Jose Sharks acquire F Travis Moen and D Kent Huskins from the Anaheim Ducks for F Nick Bonino, G Timo Pielmeier and conditional draft picks -- Ducks GM Bob Murray gave up some grit in this deal, but he was ecstatic about landing Bonino, who is having another solid season with Boston University. After helping the Terriers win a national championship in 2009, Bonino has 29 points (9 goals, 20 assists) in 26 games this season.
Carolina Hurricanes acquire F Patrick O'Sullivan and a second-round pick in 2009 from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for F Justin Williams -- O'Sullivan didn't last very long in Carolina, as he was quickly shipped to the Edmonton Oilers -- along with a second-round pick in 2009 -- in a deal that brought F Erik Cole back to Carolina. Cole, who helped the Hurricanes win a Stanley Cup in 2006, went 18 playoff games with a goal, but that didn't stop Carolina from reaching the conference finals.
New York Rangers acquire F Nik Antropov from the Toronto Maple Leafs for a second-round draft pick in 2009 and a conditional pick in 2010 -- One of two pending unrestricted free agents acquired by the Blueshirts who lasted roughly two months in New York, Antropov had 13 points in 18 regular-season games before going 2-1-3 in seven playoff games for the Rangers. He signed with the Atlanta Thrashers last summer.
New York Rangers acquire D Derek Morris from the Phoenix Coyotes in exchange for Fs Nigel Dawes and Petr Prucha and D Dmitri Kalinin -- Rangers GM Glen Sather gave up a large package to land Morris, who signed as a free agent with the Boston Bruins last summer. Prucha has 11 goals for the Coyotes this season, while Dawes has 10 with Calgary.
Boston Bruins acquire F Mark Recchi and a second-round draft pick in 2010 from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for D Matt Lashoff and F Martins Karsums -- Looking for another veteran up front, Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli surrendered a top prospect in Lashoff in order to acquire Recchi, who had 16 points in 18 regular-season games for the Bruins before going 3-3-6 in 11 playoff matches. Lashoff finished last season with Tampa Bay, but has spent the entire 2009-10 season with Norfolk in the American Hockey League.
Ottawa Senators acquire G Pascal Leclaire and a second-round pick in 2009 from the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for F Antoine Vermette -- Sens GM Bryan Murray lands an established No. 1 goalie in Leclaire, who has spent much of this season on injured reserve. Vermette, meanwhile, is on the brink of his third 20-goal season in the NHL.
Calgary Flames acquire D Jordan Leopold from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Ds Lawrence Nycholat and Ryan Wilson and a second-round pick in 2009 -- Leopold's stay in Calgary was short-lived; he was sent to Florida last summer in the mega-deal that made Jay Bouwmeester a Flame.
