The kids ranged from novice to atom and were given instruction on skating technique, passing and puck control. They also had the chance to scrimmage on the Oilers Championship Rink that will be used for the Championship round during the final day of play on Sunday.
Many parents braved the cold and stood along the boards to watch their kids play the game and celebrate hockey in its most natural state. “This event is about retracing your steps as a child and sharing these experiences with the current generation,” said John Haney, President of the Alberta Pond Hockey Association.
Each player that participated was given Oilers gear as a keepsake to remember the night. One lucky player from each session was given their very own Oilers jersey. “This is awesome!” said a 10-year old winner.
The Edmonton Oilers were honoured to be a part of the event and last night’s opening ceremony. “The commitment that the Oilers have shown to their fans and young hockey players in Northern Alberta does not go unnoticed,” said John Haney. “The Peace Country is Oil Country!”
Tournament play began today with regular pool play running through Saturday. Sunday will feature the best of the best battling head-to-head in the Championship round. This tournament serves as a feeder tournament to the World Pond Hockey Championship which originates in Plaster Rock, New Brunswick.
