Under the Scope: Oilers vs. Hurricanes

It had been a back and forth game until late in the second period when, enlivened by a Marc Pouliot go-ahead goal, the Oilers started to press. Patrick O'Sullivan sent a cross-seam pass to Mike Comrie for the one-timer. Cam Ward made a great save but Sam Gagner was right on the doorstep for the rebound and his fourteenth goal of the season. With a two-goal cushion, the Oilers never looked back.

After the Oilers tied it up seven minutes earlier, Patrick O'Sullivan ripped a pass to Gilbert Brule who was perched just below the faceoff dot. Brule corralled the puck and wristed it to the top left corner of Cam Ward to put the Oilers up 2-1 on the splendid snipe.

Mike Comrie, Jason Strudwick and J.F. Jacques were the three stars on the night and deservedly so, but we were also liking Patty O'Sullivan. He notched two assists on the night, including his zinger of a pass to Brule in the first period, and was active with his speed all night long.

Carolina was the last team in the NHL to get a road win. They went 13 games without a victory away from home which was a new franchise record that had stood since 1981-82. Despite a 6-16-4 road record, the Hurricanes had four wins in their last seven road games before the Oilers handed them their 17th road loss of the season.

"It's a relief, no doubt. Everybody deserved it; our team deserved it, our coaches, and obviously the fans. It's something to build on and something to be positive about."
- Patrick O'Sullivan on the slump-breaking win

"It's pretty neat. I haven't had too many points this year...it wasn't a pretty apple but I'll definitely take it."
- Alex Plante on getting an assist in his first NHL game.
