Kevin Smith might be living the Hollywood life now, but he's forever rooted in New Jersey. And that's best represented by his undying love for the New Jersey Devils.
Smith is an unabashed hockey fan, and he's put the game in some form or fashion in every one of his movies, most memorably a roller hockey game on the roof of a convenience store in his first film, the cult classic "Clerks."
His next film will be a hockey movie, based on the 2002 Warren Zevon song, "Hit Somebody."
Smith answered a few quick questions from NHL.com:
NHL.com: Who's your all-time favorite Devil?
Kevin Smith: Tough call between Marty (Brodeur), Scott Stevens and Johnny Madden. Marty and Stevens for obvious reasons; Madden because I always dug how fast he was. Dude would just rocket and skate like a demon. Or rather, a Devil.
NHL.com: What's your best Devils-related memory?
KS: A random 1989 regular-season game. My friend Walt Flanagan and I have seats against the corner glass, home side. Kenny Daneyko winds up in our corner for about nine times, and each time, it really seems like he's staring straight at me. Walt is in hysterics over this. Years later, Walt and I are at Ken Daneyko Night, when they raised his sweater. At a cocktail party afterward, we got to meet Kenny. I tried to tell him that story, but he offered me a polite but confused nod. Really awkward.
Either that or when they won Cup No. 1.
NHL.com: Living in Los Angeles, are you more a Kings guy or a Ducks guy? Which gets the better crowd?
KS: Currently neither. But if the Kings bring Wayne Gretzky back into their club now that his time in Phoenix is done, I'll get a box at the Staples Center. A seasonal opportunity, extremely local to where I now live, to show a little money/appreciation to the guy who gave so much to the game for the last three decades? I wouldn't be able to give the Kings my cash fast enough. And I'll bet lots more feel the same way.
NHL.com: You've appeared on the Dinner For Five show on IFC; who would be your dream hockey-themed Dinner for Five?
KS: The 1984 Oilers: Gretzky, Paul Coffey, Mark Messier, Kevin Lowe, Glenn Anderson. Can't I have more than five?
NHL.com: Best place to see or play hockey? Roof of a convenience store?
KS: At the Rock (Prudential Center), silly.
