Edmonton, AB – The Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation today announced that as a result of the EOCF and Oilers Ladies Rally Against Cancer initiative, $100,000 has been raised and pledged to support local charities.

The $100,000 target was reached through two initiatives: the Rally Against Cancer retro scarves which were sold in-game on October 29th, the night the Oilers hosted the Detroit Red Wings, and a Rally Against Cancer online auction which gave fans the chance to bid on one-of-a-kind memorabilia and game worn equipment.

“Our first ever Rally Against Cancer initiative was an overwhelming success exceeding all of our expectations,” said Natalie Minckler, EOCF’s Executive Chair. “The funds raised will result in a significant donation towards two local charities, the Kids with Cancer Society and the Alberta Cancer Foundation while also supporting the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation’s key funding effort.”

Oilers Fans again demonstrated strong support for this EOCF initiative, which is now an annual event held to support the larger, league-wide NHL Hockey Fights Cancer.

“The Alberta Cancer Foundation thanks the Oilers and their fans for this outstanding support in the inaugural Rally Against Cancer,” said Jane Weller, Alberta Cancer Foundation. “This donation will help fund a new radiation treatment invention at the Cross Cancer Institute that will, one day, allow doctors to see and treat cancers at the same time. In future, this will mean more effectively targeted and gentler radiation treatments for patients, with a greater likelihood for a cure.”

Rally Against Cancer supported the NHL’s Hockey Fights Cancer month which took place in October. All 30 NHL teams participated through a fundraiser of their choice which benefited local charities.

The Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation (EOCF) is dedicated to building strong and vibrant communities by contributing its resources and financial support to charitable organizations that serve the residents of Oil Country. The EOCF has worked to change lives in Oil Country through their support of a host of deserving organizations. The Foundation gives back in excess of $1 million annually to registered charities throughout Central and Northern Alberta who focus their activities on youth, education and health and wellness.
