Oilers sign Ladislav Smid, Gilbert Brule & Ryan Stone
Defenceman inks two-year deal with club; Centres ink one-year, two-way deals

Steve Tambellini commented on today’s signing. “I’m very pleased to have Ladislav signed. He’s a very competitive young defenceman that has the ability to contribute in all situations.”
The 6’3”, 226-pound defenceman has played 202 career NHL games, all with the Edmonton Oilers, recording three goals and 22 assists for 25 points and 152 penalty minutes.
“This is great news for me”. Smid commented upon signing his agreement. “I really enjoy playing for the Oilers. I feel my game is improving every year and I can’t wait to get started again this fall.”
Originally drafted by the Anaheim Ducks in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft (1st round, 9th overall), Smid was obtained from the Anaheim Ducks with Joffrey Lupul, two first round draft choices and a second round draft choice in exchange for defenceman Chris Pronger on July 3, 2006.
On the international stage, the Frydlant, Czech Republic native has represented his country on several occasions, playing in three World Junior Hockey Championships from 2004 through 2006, and two World Hockey Championships (2007 and 2008). He helped lead the Czech World Junior team to a bronze medal in 2005, recording two assists in seven games.
The 5’10”, 180 pound centre has played in 157 career NHL games with 14 goals and 21 assists for 35 points and 64 penalty minutes.
Drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the first round of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft (6th overall), Brule was acquired by the Oilers in exchange for Raffi Torres on July 1, 2008.
Stone, a 6’2”, 215 pound native of Calgary, Alberta, was originally selected by the Penguins in the second round (32nd overall) of the 2003 National Hockey League Entry Draft. He was acquired, along with goaltender Dany Sabourin and a fourth round draft choice in 2011 from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for goaltender Mathieu Garon on January 17, 2009.
Prior to being aquired by the Oilers, Stone played 38 games with the AHL’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, recording nine goals and 19 assists for 28 points. In 39 games with the Falcons after the trade, he notched eight goals and 20 assists for 28 points.
In eight career NHL games, the 24-year-old centre has recorded one assist and seven penalty minutes.
