Dubnyk and Syvret named to Team Canada roster for Spengler Cup

Goaltender Devan Dubnyk and defenceman Danny Syvret have been named to the Team Canada roster for the upcoming Spengler Cup, which will be held in Davos, Switzerland from December 26th to 31st.

This will be the second time that both Oilers prospects have represented Canada on the world stage. Dubnyk, the Oilers first choice, 14th overall, in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, was a member of the gold medal winning Canadian National Junior Team at the 2006 World Junior Championship and Syvret won gold with Team Canada at the 2005 World Junior Champioship.

After five seasons of junior hockey with the Kamloops Blazers, the 20-year-old Dubnyk is playing in his first professional season with the Stockton Thunder. With Edmontons ECHL affiliate, he has compiled a 2.71 GAA and .914 save percentage in 14 games and has a record of 8-2-2-2 (W-L-OTL-SOL).

Syvret, the Oilers third choice, 51st overall, in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, is currently in his second season with the Oilers organization and has scored 4-8-12 with 6 PIM in 28 games for the Grad Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League, The 511", 203 pound blueliner ranks seventh on the Griffins scoring list and is sixth in assists.

Syvret made his professional debut with the Hamilton Bulldogs (AHL) in 2005-06, scoring 0-21-21 with 38 PIM in 62 games. He also made his Oilers/NHL debut last season, appearing in 10 games with no points and six penalty minutes with Edmonton.

Canada finished second at last years Spengler Cup. The Spengler Cup dates back to 1923 and is the oldest continual club tournament in the world. The National Mens Team has competed at the event since 1984 and has won 10 titles during that period. Canada last won the Spengler Cup in 2003.

Team Canada will open the 2006 Spengler Cup on December 26th against Mora IK from Sweden at 12:15 pm (MST). All of Canadas games will be televised on Rogers Sportsnet.
