Edmonton Oilers unveil third jersey
|Oilers captain Ethan Moreau models the new Oilers third jersey.
When Kevin Lowe scored the first NHL Edmonton Oilers goal in Chicago on October 10th, 1979 he was wearing the Oilers Blue and Orange uniform and the new Oilers 3rd is a replica of that historic jersey which will be worn 14 times during this season.
“It’s terrific that the original uniform is being brought back and celebrated. All of the things we take so much pride in today were accomplished in that uniform and I think fans deserve to see their team and especially their favorite players on this year’s team in those colors” said Kevin Lowe, Oilers President of Hockey Operations.
The new Oilers 3rd will be worn 14 times including the Home Opener against Colorado on October 12, against all of the original six team when they visit Rexall Place , the Glenn Anderson celebration on January 18th and for the Oilers annual ‘Shirts Off Our Backs” charity game December 19th.
A unique feature of those games will not only be the fact that the 3rd Jersey will be worn but the team will also have special gloves, helmets, pants and socks to re-create the full effect of the Oilers uniform look of the 1980’s and early 90’s.
Oilers President and CEO Patrick LaForge touched on the process and importance of this new jersey by stating, “A new uniform for the Oilers is a very serious matter for Oilers fans, and is not taken lightly by any of us. When we conducted focus groups with fans to test the idea, overwhelmingly they chose this uniform. I think that thought process began when the Legends game was played against the Montreal Canadiens at the Molson Canadian Heritage Classic and the Oilers greats wore this uniform. Now when we celebrate our 30th season in the NHL, this special jersey is the perfect compliment to that milestone. There is also much history associated with the original uniform especially the dark colors. The Oilers have won 5 Stanley Cups including the night Craig Simpson scored the winning goal in Boston and the Oilers won their 5th cup wearing this uniform.”
