Oilers sign Ryan Potulny to one-year deal
The Edmonton Oilers have signed centre Ryan Potulny (poh-TUHL-nee) to a one-year contract.

The 6’0”, 180 pound native of Grand Forks, North Dakota was acquired by the Oilers on June 6th from the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for defenceman Danny Syvret.

Potulny split the 2007-08 season between Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Phantoms, the Flyers’ American Hockey League affiliate. In his second full season as a professional, the 23-year-old forward scored one assist in seven NHL games with the Flyers and registered 21 goals and 26 assists for 47 points in 58 games for the Phantoms.

Since turning pro following an outstanding collegiate career at the University of Minnesota, Potluny has registered seven goals and seven assists with 26 penalty minutes in 44 regular season games for Philadelphia. A third round draft choice of the Flyers in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, he made his NHL debut with the Flyers in 2005-06 scoring an assist in two games.

A finalist for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award in 2006, Potulny scored 118 points on 68 goals and 50 assists in 100 games with the University of Minnesota from 2003-04 to 2005-06. His final season with the Golden Gophers saw him score a career-high 38 goals and 63 points in 41 games as he was named an NCAA West first team All-American and a WCHA first team-all star. He led the NCAA in points, goals, powerplay goals (17), goals-per-game (0.93) and was second in points-per-game (1.54).

Potulny also excelled in the junior ranks as he played two seasons with the Lincoln Stars of the United States Hockey League prior to moving to the collegiate ranks. He was a key member of Lincoln’s 2003 USHL Clark Cup championship team, leading the league in scoring with 35-43-78 in 54 games. He was named the USHL Player of the Year as well as the USHL Top Forward and was named to the USHL’s first all-star team.
