Oilers sign Denis Grebeshkov
In his first season with the Oilers, the 6’0”, 209 pound native of Yaroslavl, Russia, scored three goals and 15 assists for 18 points in 71 games to finish third in scoring among Oilers defencemen behind Tom Gilbert and Joni Pitkanen. He was fourth on the Oilers in plus/minus at +2 and registered 22 penalty minutes while averaging 16:52 minutes of ice time per game.
Making his debut with the Oilers at Detroit on October 8th, Grebeshkov scored his first point with Edmonton when he tallied an assist versus the Minnesota Wild on October 25th. He netted his first career NHL goal versus Phoenix on January 10th and his powerplay goal at Nashville on February 19th was the 8,000th goal in Edmonton’s franchise history.
The 24-year-old defenceman was obtained from the New York Islanders in exchange for defenceman Marc-Andre Bergeron and a third round choice in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft on February 18, 2007.
Originally Los Angeles’ first choice, 18th overall, in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, Grebeshkov played with the Islanders and Los Angeles before coming to the Oilers. He has scored 3-21-24 with 42 penalty minutes in 104 career NHL games since making his debut with the Kings on February 28, 2004.
Grebeshkov, who played with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl of the Russian Super League in 2006-07, has been invited to the Russian National Team’s training camp in preparation for the upcoming 2008 IIHF World Championship.
