Gagner named NHL Rookie of the Month
Edmonton Oilers centre Sam Gagner has been named the NHL’s Rookie of the Month for February.

The youngest player in the NHL, Gagner led all rookies in scoring with 13 points in 12 games during February. The 5’11”, 191 pound London, Ontario native scored three goals and 10 assists during the month. Gagner edged New York Rangers centre Brandon Dubinsky (6-5-11 in 12 games), Phoenix Coyotes center Peter Mueller (4-7-11 in 14 games), Chicago Blackhawks center Jonathan Toews (3-7-10 in 10 games) and Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price (5-2-0, 2.33 GAA, .925 save pct. & one shutout) for the monthly award.

Gagner scored points in 10 of the Oilers’ 12 games during February, including a team-high nine-game point scoring streak that saw him score 3-9-12 from February 4th to 24th. He also established a new Edmonton team record for the longest assist scoring streak by an Oilers rookie, scoring nine assists from Feb. 4th to 22nd.

He registered multiple-point games against Calgary on February 4th (1-1-2), Chicago on February 6th (0-2-2) and Nashville on February 19th (1-1-2).

The Oilers’ first choice and the sixth overall selection in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, Gagner has scored 7-28-35 with 19 penalty minutes in 63 games this season. He is fourth on the Oilers scoring list and is fifth in scoring among NHL rookies. His 28 assists are fourth among rookies and he ranks among the first-year leaders in powerplay assists (6th) and powerplay scoring (7th with 1-9-10).

Gagner’s 35 points ties him for sixth place on the all-time Edmonton rookie scoring list with Miroslav Satan, who scored 18-17-35 in 62 games for the Oilers in 1995-96.

Gagner joins previous 2007-08 Rookie of the Month winners Kane (October), Atlanta Thrashers defenseman Tobias Enstrom (November), Washington Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom (December) and Mueller (February).
