Oilers sign 10,000 hats to aid fight against breast cancer

Last week, Edmonton Oilers players each likely had a mild case of writer's cramp after signing 10,000 pink and blue ballcaps but everybody recognized the importance of the cause. "It's part of being a pro in today's NHL culture," said Oilers Head Coach Craig MacTavish. "Part of being a professional athlete is that you want to help out, be good in the community and be well-respected."

The caps were available at Tuesday's game against the Detroit Red Wings for fans to purchase at $20 each. All 10,000 sold out before the puck drop at 7:38 p.m.

"I think it's a great gesture by our players to commit to signing 500 autographs each for Hockey Fights Cancer."

In past seasons, the hats have sold out before the first puck drop, a big reason why the number was upped to 10,000 this year.

"This is our fourth annual event. We've incrementally increased every year. The first year we had 350 hats and now we have 10,000," said Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation Executive Director Darryl Lindenbach.

"It's a pretty big pile of hats and at first seemed like a pretty daunting task," said Oilers forward Marty Reasoner. "But it's for a great cause and we feel pretty lucky to be part of this organization and part of this city. This is the least we can do for such a great cause."

For new Oilers forward Dustin Penner, it was his first experience signing hats for the Power of Pink.

"There were quite a few hats. I could have used a masseuse halfway through," Penner joked. "In life, cancer touches people one way or another and this is our chance to fight against it."

MacTavish made sure to note the importance of the Oilers as a team getting involved in the fight against cancer.

"It's part of the team's identity. You want to be good in the community and help out as much as you can," MacTavish said.

"You can't obviously do everything but you try to do the more important things and this is one of them."

Fans who want to do their part or simply would like a souvenir but weren't be able make it to the game can bid on hats or even game-worn jerseys, helmets and sticks used that night. Online bids will be accepted until 9:00 PM (MST) on Monday, November 5th, at
